Description	:	Pleasant Plain Cemetery is located in the southeast corner of the southwest quarter of Section 7, Township 4, North Range 1 in Thayer County, Nebraska. This cemetery is situated east of Bruning, Nebraska, along Highway #4, five and one-half miles east of the junction of highways #4 and #81. Read More	Pleasant Plain Cemetery is located in the southeast corner of the southwest quarter of Section 7, Township 4, North Range 1 in Thayer County, Nebraska. This cemetery is situated east of Bruning, Nebraska, along Highway #4, five and one-half miles east of the junction of highways #4 and #81. The early burial sites of the first homesteaders were generally a small area on the individual homesteads. As more and more settlers came to a region, a general site within the area was used. Such was the case with the Pleasant Plain vicinity. Two DeLong children had been buried in 1879 and 1881 in the extreme southeast corner of the southwest quarter of Julia and Lewis DeLong's property. As early victims of the fatal disease, black diphtheria, in 1883, Homer Bacon's three children were also interred in this southeast corner of the DeLong Property. At this time, steps were taken to establish a cemetery where the DeLong and Bacon children had been buried. The diphtheria epidemic of 1883 and 1897-1898, the cholera siege in 1894, during the early settlement years, took the lives of many people living in the Pleasant Plain area. Many of the graves were marked by planting clumps of iris, bushes, trees or just putting limestone rocks on the gravesite. Thus, with the passage of time, the limestone rocks deteriorated, flowers, bushes and trees died. It is estimated there were about 100 burials in the cemetery from 1879 to 1915. As near as can be determined, the last burial was about 1912. The cemetery received only minor attention other than mowing from 1920 until 1969. There were more grave stones erected than the eleven markers remaining on today's cemetery. Over the years many of them fell over and were moved about during the course of mowing. Presently, none of these markers can be found at the cemetery and what happened to these stones is not known.
