The family has been sadly afflicted since he was taken down, a daughter having died at her home in Fort Scott, and another daughter, while nursing her father, was so unfortunate as to lose her home and furniture at Iola by fire. Dennis Burns was born in New York in 1846 and came when young with his parents to Will County, Ill., where he grew to manhood and in 1873 was married to Mary Alice Sheldon. They came to this vicinity in 1876, and settled on a farm. In 1884 they moved to Cherokee, where he worked at the carpenter trade most of the time since. At his death he was 60 years old. His wife and one daughter survive him. He was an honest peaceable citizen who attended strictly to his own affairs and was respected by all who intimately knew him. He, when a young man, was converted and joined the M.E. church, and at the time of his death was a member in this city. His pastor, Rev. Harmon Allen, held the services at the church on Monday and the remains were laid to rest in the Cherokee cemetery.
