Description	:	Dennis L. Guilford (Denny), 87, died peacefully surrounded by family Sunday, January 4, 2015 at Community Memorial Hospital. Denny was born September 15, 1927 the son of the late Leonard and Margaret (Stein) Guilford in Sherwood, Ohio. Denny was a graduate of Sherwood High School in 1945. Guilford (Denny), 87, died peacefully surrounded by family Sunday, January 4, 2015 at Community Memorial Hospital. Denny was born September 15, 1927 the son of the late Leonard and Margaret (Stein) Guilford in Sherwood, Ohio. Denny was a graduate of Sherwood High School in 1945. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served and protected our country bravely for 18 months as paratrooper during the Occupation of Japan. After arriving home from the military he fell in love with a young school teacher by the name of Betty Culler. On August 9, 1952 they were united in marriage and their family had begun. He worked for 45 years for the CSX Railroad in signal maintenance. His passion though was the outdoors. He lovingly built "Poverty Acres Farm" teaching the virtues and love of farming, hunting, fishing and conservation to his children. As the grandchildren came along, Grandpa Denny continued sharing his love of the outdoors. Denny was a longtime member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Hicksville where he served as a Eucharist minister and on the church council. He served on the Hicksville Village Council for 16 years, and he received the Ohio Conservationist of the Year Award. He was the founder of the Defiance County Pheasants Forever, a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Eagles, NRA, Grange, and Defiance County Coon Hunters Club. He coached Little League and Pony League teams. Denny will be greatly missed by his family, Turk (Susan), Bruce (Debbie), Diane (Greg) Collins all of Hicksville, Bret (Evie) of Cicero, NY and Brad (Deborah) of Hamilton, IN; grandchildren Aaron, Kristin, Ashley, Kirk, Tori, Amy, Kimberly, Ben, Hillary, Levi, Matt, Alex, and Amber. 7 great grandchildren, and a sister-in-law Shirley Guilford. His granddaughter Samantha, and two brothers Donald (Clara) and Roger have preceded him in death. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2:00-8:00 at Smith & Brown Funeral Home, Hicksville with a prayer service at 7:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Hicksville on Thursday at 10:30. Burial at Forest Home Cemetery will be at a later date.
