On April 20, 2007, Mayor Tom Hanafan read a proclamation naming Council Bluffs and southwest Iowa a Purple Martin Capital of Iowa, and in June of that same year, Nature Society News – known as the Voice of the purple martin – devoted its entire front page to Devine's successful efforts. "It's a big sigh of relief," Devine told The Daily Nonpareil in June 2007. "I'm vindicated because my quest has come through." Back in 1992, Devine succeeded in making the city of Omaha Nebraska's purple martin capital. "I'm the only guy to get two states as purple martin capitals," Devine said in 2009. While he was devoted to martins, he had room for another love: Johnny Cash. Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash had millions of fans around the world, but "there is only one Dennis Devine." That's how author Peggy Knight described Devine in her book, "At Home with Johnny, June and Mother Maybelle – Snapshots from My Life with the Cash and Carter Families." Devine provided the author with numerous photos he took during his many years of friendship with the legendary "Man in Black." Though he had been following Cash's music for several years before, Devine personally met the singing legend for the first time on Feb. 26, 1960, during Cash's appearance at the former Paramount Theater in Omaha. It was the beginning of a lifelong friendship that became not only the bond between two men, but also the relationship between the country music star and the community of Council Bluffs. Through Devine's efforts, Council Bluffs is one of two cities worldwide with a street named in the singer's honor, and the RailsWest Railroad Museum has a collection of Cash artifacts. Cash himself visited there when it was the old Rock Island Depot during a 1987 concert. After becoming ill during a Pride Week concert in May of that year, the event was postponed several weeks until he could perform on a September evening. Devine's devotion to country music led to his promoting and encouraging performers of all walks of life. In September 2004, Devine was inducted into America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame. The ceremonies were held at the Old Time Country and Bluegrass Festival in Harrison County. Council Bluffs Fire Chief Alan Byers never worked with Devine, but witnessed his work with other retired firefighters. "He was constantly asking questions; he was just one of those guys never lost passion and desire for the department and the people who worked here," Byers said. Dennis is survived by his son, Dennis P. Devine, Jr., and wife, Annette; granddaughters, Amanda, Kursten, and Callie Ruth; brother, Norman Devine and wife, Pat; sister, Jean Nymann and husband, Don; and brother, Joe Devine; nieces and nephews.
