He lived in Falls Church, VA. Mr. Shaw joined the U.S. Information Agency in 1967 and served in the binational center program as director of courses in Tehran, Iran and the American Center director in Karachi, Pakistan. He was then posted to Lagos, Nigeria, as assistant cultural affairs officer. After learning Portuguese, Mr. Shaw was sent as cultural affairs officer to Rio de Janeiro and country cultural affairs officer in Lisbon and Brasilia. He retired in 1995. He was born in Canova, SD and graduated from Dakota State University in Madison, SD. While teaching high school in Garretson, he received a master's degree in 1961 in educational administration from South Dakota State University. Mr. Shaw taught high school and worked in administration for Department of Defense Schools in Germany and Italy. He returned to teach in Minneapolis and study for a specialist degree in counselling and guidance from the University of Minnesota in 1967. After retiring from the USIA, he joined Partners of the Americas in 1996, working in the education and culture program with Latin America. He played a key role in the creation of the Brazil Youth Ambassadors Program, which has become a model for youth exchange. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Dana (Grimstvedt) Shaw of Falls Church, VA; two sons, David Reed (wife Kathryn) and Brian Ray (wife Kim) of Aliso Viejo, CA; a brother, Gail; a sister, Carol; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
