Read More	In Memory Of: Flandreau - Gladys Bertina Shaw, 95, of Flandreau, formerly of Canova, died Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at the Riverview Manor, Flandreau. Gladys Bertina Gulbranson was born on November 8, 1910 in Lake Preston, South Dakota. Gladys was one of six children of Carl and Hannah (Olson) Gulbranson. Gladys attended primary and secondary school in Lake Preston, and she played on the girls' high school basketball team and graduated in 1928. Gladys was united in marriage to Ray Shaw of Howard, South Dakota on August 7, 1933 in Tripp, South Dakota. The couple ran a poultry and egg store in Artesian, South Dakota for one year and then moved to Howard where Ray was elected Miner County Clerk of Courts. In 1938, Ray and Gladys moved to nearby Canova and operated "Ray's Store", for 19 years when it was then sold to Rusty Hiltunen. Gladys continued to work in the store until 1993 for a total of 55 years. In Canova, Ray and Gladys were very active in community affairs and sports, particularly amateur and youth baseball, and helped obtain one of the earliest small town lighted baseball fields. Gladys continued to live in Canova after Ray died in February of 1962. Gladys remained active in the Canova and Miner County communities, as a census taker, a store clerk, in the community Club and as a active volunteer. She loved children and young people, as well as sports, and operated the Canova baseball concession stand for hundreds of games, for over a 31 year period. Well known o young people as the "candy lady", she finally gave up "burning popcorn" in 1993. Gladys was an active member of the Canova Congregational Church from 1938 to 2000, when her health declined and she moved to the Riverview Manor in Flandreau. Gladys was the Grand Marshall for the Canova Centennial celebration in 1983, a participant in a cross generational program in Howard in 1990, a regular attendee at many Canova Gang games, and an active supporter of school, church and community activities. Gladys traveled widely throughout the U.S. to see friends and family, and to Europe, Africa and South America, Visiting son Dennis and family, who were serving abroad on U.S. diplomatic assignments. Glady's family was an important part of her life. Those grateful for having shared her life include two sons: Dennis (Dana) of Falls Church, VA; Gail (Barbra) of Morgantown, WV; a daughter: Carol Shaw of Madison, SD; 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ray, three brothers: Herman, Clifford, and Clarence; two sisters: Arlene and Marion.
