Denver Ross Miles was born June 13, 1916, at Cherry Box, Mo., the son of Marshall G. and Ada Anthony Miles. He attended school in LaPlata, Mo. Farm work brought him to Iowa and on Oct. 7, 1939, he was married to Verna Marie Sackett at Brooklyn. They farmed near Brooklyn for several years. After moving into Brooklyn, they operated Miles Monument Company. After selling the business to Watts Vault & Monument Company at Montezuma, he remained active as a sales associate with them. He was proud of the monument business and the quality of workmanship he did. Denver served on the Brooklyn School Board from 1956 to 1960. He loved to work on his two antique tractors, and for more than 28 years, he spent the winter months in Rio Grande Valley, Texas. After retiring he learned to play golf. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, and was a Mason, a member of the Corinthian Lodge No. 174 at Brooklyn. While living in Donna, Texas, he sang with the Redeemers Gospeleers. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Miles. Denver is survived by his wife of 60 years, Verna; one son and his wife, Dennis and Patricia, of Norway, Iowa; one daughter and her husband, Judy and Lowell Hockett of Sarasota, Fla.; six grandchildren; close friends, Robert and Denise Christian; two sisters, Ruby Arment and Margaret Stutsman, both of LaPlata, Mo.; and other relatives and many friends. - Brooklyn Chronicle, 15-Dec-1999
