Read More	Verna Marie Miles, 97, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at the Brooklyn Community Estate in Brooklyn, Iowa. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 16, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church at Brooklyn, Iowa. Burial will be held in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery in Brooklyn. Verna was born August 17, 1916 at the family farm home south of Brooklyn, Iowa. Her parents were John and Bisse Sackett (Freeland). At the age of 25, her mother, Bisse, passed away eighteen days after Verna was born. In many pictures, you will see Verna wearing her mother's gold locket. She was raised on the family farm by her father and grandparents. Verna was very fond of her grandfather, Frank Sackett. She graduated from Poweshiek County Rural School in Scott Township on June 10, 1930. On October 7, 1939, Verna was united in marriage to Denver Ross Miles at the Grace United Methodist Parsonage where they were lifelong members. They farmed near Brooklyn for many years. Verna became a Certified Nursing Assistant, worked in the BGM school cafeteria, and Crosson Rexall Drugstore. She enjoyed playing cards with friends, dancing and spending the winter months in Rio Grande Valley, Texas for over 28 years. She also loved traveling and enjoyed Hawaii and cruising the Caribbean. Verna was a member of the Rebecca Lodge #202 in Brooklyn. Preceding her in death was her husband, Denver, in 1999, and her parents, John and Bisse Sackett. Verna is survived by her daughter, Judie (Lowell) Hockett of Sarasota, Florida and Dennis (Patricia) Miles of Norway, Iowa; six grandchildren, Curtis, Corey, Casey, Christine Miles; Eric Hockett and Chad (Eileen) Hockett; and five great grandchildren, Jackson and Wyatt Miles, and Taylor, Tyler and Austin Hockett. Also, her special friends were Bob and Denise Christian of Grinnell, Harold and Pauline Hiner of Brooklyn and Jeanette Wiley of Montezuma. Source: Holland Coble Funeral Home
