He was born July 7, 1932 at home in Valley, WA. to Bernard (JR) and Lucille (Morris) Helt. He graduated from Valley High School in 1950. While in high school he met Fern VanVliet and they were married March 16, 1951. Derald became a father at age of 19 with the birth of his daughter, Diana, and again 13 months later with birh of his son, Duane. Two months later, Derald's father Bernie suddenly passed away. Bernie worked for the State Highway Garage (now the DOT) in Valley at the time of his death and his job was offered to Derald and he was transferred to the Loon Lake garage. Derald and Fern bought a small house across the road from the garage at Loon Lake and lived there for 64 years. The house was added onto as was another daughter, Debbie. Derald was very active in the Loon Lake Community including helping to build and becoming fire chief for almost 30 years a the Loon Lake Fire Department. He was on the board of the Loon Lake Community Health Center and a member of the Loon Association. He attended the Loon Lake Assembly of God church, Springdale Community Church and the Lakeside Nazarene church at Deer Lake. He was able to retire from the DOT at the age of 52 but kept plowing snow with his own truck and keeping busy building docks and other jobs. Hist garage door was always open for anyone looking to need a welding job or help with other projects. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister, a grandson and is wife, Fern. He is survived by his three children, Diana Blume, Spokane, Duane (Kathy) Spokane Valley, and Debbie (Dave) Newton, Gifford, WA, eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
