Description	:	Grandma was born to William and Carrie (Clark) Sheaffer in January of 1910. She was one of 13 brothers and sisters. She said that she loved to ride horses when she was young but I don't know what age she was at that time. She met the love of her life at the age of 13 in a dance hall called Dreamland in Junction City. Read More	Grandma was born to William and Carrie (Clark) Sheaffer in January of 1910. She was one of 13 brothers and sisters. She said that she loved to ride horses when she was young but I don't know what age she was at that time. She met the love of her life at the age of 13 in a dance hall called Dreamland in Junction City. He was Mark Donaldson Crouch and was 10 years older than her (it was legal then) and one of about 12 brothers and sisters who all came from Kentucky. Dessie and Mark married a couple of years later when she was 15 years old. One year later their first son Frederick arrived. Mark was a minister and Jack-of-all-trades (it was the depression era so everyone had to learn what they could to survive) and they traveled between Kansas, Colorado and Missouri eventually moving out to Vallejo, California in the 1940s. During the coming years grandma gave birth to 9 more children--2 sons and 7 daughters. Two of her daughters died as infants. In California they lived in the Federal Terrace Housing on Gardner Street (now a different name). Mark was a detective located just inside the Mare Island gate and he was on the famous Black Dahlia Murder Case for about one year. They moved to a house on Tennessee Street which is now gone and then moved to El Dorado Street. They were both members in the Salvation Army and were very dedicated to its cause. There were numerous family gatherings at the house which was especially loved around holidays. Grandma never learned to drive but she loved to sew and made doll clothes for her granddaughter's baby dolls and Barbies. She loved to play board games and would often have a beer or two with her family when playing (and they could get very ornery with each other when playing as they liked to say). Grandma was a very devoted Christian who deeply believed in the Lord and was never judgmental or self-righteous. She was a very sweet soul and was known for her kindness and acceptance of virtually everyone she knew and met. She always had a smile on her face and very seldom had a mean thing to say of anyone. She was loved by many people. When her husband died in 1979, after caring for him for several years prior (Parkinson's Disease and Anemia), she was so broken-hearted for they were together nearly all but 13 years of her life. My mother, Ellie, moved in with her not long after and later the house they rented was sold and they moved to Holiday Garden apartments for seniors where grandma spent the rest of her days. She volunteered at a senior retirement home and a nursing facility where her two daughters worked (my mom and Donna). There she was known and loved for her lively wit, laugh and cheerful nature. Grandma went on to become a great grandmother and a great-great grandmother to numerous grandchildren until her death. She loved to watch old shows on TV but most especially loved, 'Touched by an Angel' and she would call every evening to tell me it was about to start. She really loved holidays but Christmas most of all and delighted in my mother's extravagant decorations around the apartment. She shared her family history and grandpa's family history with me long before she died and had quite a sharp memory up until her sudden decline in the months before her death in 1998. My mother still lived with her then and she had an incident where she was sent to the hospital at Kaiser in Vallejo. She was sent home on hospice in October. She was still in good spirits though often tired and worn from heart trouble right up until the day. She passed later on that evening surrounded by her daughters and several grandchildren. An angel left the world that day and joined her husband, family and children who went on before her. I love you and miss you so Grandma and so do your children and grandchildren.
