Schneider was born on Nov. 23, 1921, at his parent's home in the South Divide area near Wauneta, Neb. He was the eldest of three sons born to Alice Petsch and Walter O. Schneider. Even though Dewaine traveled extensively across the United States and Europe as a jockey and later as a soldier in World War II, it was in the southwest corner of Nebraska that beckoned him and it was there that he made his home. It was there that Dewaine met and married the love of his life, Gladys Nordhausen. They were married on July 13, 1946. The couple raised four wonderful children: John, Thom, Steve and Dorrie. They lived in several locations settling back in this area for the last 30 years. Dewaine believed in God, country and family and lived his life accordingly. He was an honest, hardworking man who made the best of everything. Dewaine put little value in worldly possessions and great value in family. He will be deeply missed by his three sons and his daughter. His nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren will miss their grandfather deeply but will rejoice in his legacy and especially the eternal life that is given to him. Dewaine W. Schneider passed away Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, at the Heritage Nursing Home at 87 years of age. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Glenn and Ivan Schneider; grandson, Justice C. Schneider and his beloved wife of over 60 years, Gladys. Survivors include John Schneider and wife, Jane, of Houston, Texas, Thom Schneider and wife, Marie, of Dickinson, Texas and Steve Schneider and wife, Rosa, of Spokane Wash.; daughter, Dorrie and husband, Gregg Jones, of Cheyenne, Wyo.; nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Funeral services for Dewaine were held Monday, Oct.5, 2009 at 10 a.m. MT at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Wauneta, with Pastor Greg Stuckwisch officiating. Musical selections chosen included the solo, "Amazing Grace" sung by Ms. Hillary Jones and the congregational hymns, "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "How Great Thou Art," accompanied by organist Berneta Steinert. Casketbearers were Rodney Petsch, Errol Nordhausen, Laverne Denker, Richard Greeley, Nicholi Schneider and John Johnston. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post and VFW Post of Wauneta, Neb.
