His most intimate friends knew that he had been in poor health for many months, but even they had no idea that his case was so serious. Last winter he contracted a severe cold and for a long time he was quite deaf, but he seemed to get over his deafness and, being of a cheerful disposition, he made few complaints, and when asked concerning his health, he invariably said "Oh I am getting better, and will be all right in a few days," when he was gradually growing worse.His partner, Mr. Kersenbrock, realizing that he was not a well man, induced him last Thursday to quit work for a while, go out in the country, and take a rest. Accordingly, he went out to Pony Bushboom's, his brother-in-law, last Friday. On Sunday, he arose at the usual time, apparently as well as usual, and while seated at the breakfast table fell from his chair in an unconscious condition. Dr. Loughridge was summoned, who did all that he could to make him comfortable. The doctor says that his lungs were badly effected and he also had heart trouble. Mr. Broer was born Sept. 19, 1867 in Minonk, Woodford Co., Ill. He came with his parents to Nebraska in 1877, locating in Seward County about ten miles northwest of Crete. He attended school there and for several years worked his father's farm. About four years ago he came to Crete and engaged in the saloon business with William Kersenbrock. Mr. Broer was a very quiet, peaceable man and had the friendship of all who knew him. His father and mother reside in Thayer County and he also has one brother and two sisters. The funeral occurred at the home of his sister, Lena Busboom, on Wednesday and a very large concourse of people attended, nearly 100 teams following his remains to their last resting place. He was a genial, quiet, peaceable citizen, and he will be missed and mourned by a large host of personal friends. Excerpted from The Crete Vidette Herald, October 6, 1904, page 7.
