Read More	HIS HOME AS BOY HERE WAS ONLY SOD HUT Dick Schut Came In Covered Wagon With Parents Saturday evening the Sioux Center community was shocked, by news of the death of Mr. Dick Schut, prominent retired farmer living in the “Old town”. Mr. Schut had not been in good health for some time, having passed through a severe illness about two years ago. He recovered from the attack, however, and his sudden death was unexpected. As he rose from his chair to go to the supper table, he sank to the floor, his heart having ceased to beat. He was 62 years of age. Born at Waupun, Wisconsin, Sept. 18, 1870, he left that place at the age of two and a half years with his parents, who set out by covered wagon to settle in the new prairie country. His pioneer parents the late Mr. and Mrs. Sandven Schut, took up a homestead claim in 1872 east of what later became the town of Sioux Center. Their first home was a sod hut, and the boy and his brothers and early learned the ways of pioneer children of those days. His first wife was Miss Margaret Punt and to this union four children were born, Namely Mrs. Jake Den Herder (named Fannie for her pioneer grandmother), Maurice; Neal, Maurice; Mrs. Arie De Boom (Marie), Hull; Sam, Maurice. Mrs. Schut died in 1900, and two years later Mr. Schut was married to Miss Grace Nyman, the wedding taking place at Carme. Six children were born to the union: Egbert B. of Gobbels, Mich.; Mrs. John Smith (Margaret) of Maurice; Mrs. Henry Dykstra (Johanna), Hull; Mrs. Dick Mulder (Harriet), Alton; Mis Henrietta and Gerrit, at home. Besides his wife and ten children, fifteen grandchildren, five brothers and three sisters survive Mr. Schut. The brothers are Gt. John and Sam Schut, Colton, S.D.; Frank, Holland, Michigan; Peter and Tennis, Sioux Center; the sisters: Mrs. Peter Westra, Hull; Mrs. Adam Punt, Sioux Center; Miss Rena Schut, Holland, Mich.; also his stepmother, Mrs. De Witt, Holland, Michigan. For many years the family lived on a farm north of Sioux Center where Mr. Schut took an active part in community and political affairs, though he never desired to hold office. He was, however, for many years road commissioner of his township. He helped organized and was a director of the local telephone company. Thirteen years ago Mr. and Mrs. Schut and family left the farm, having built a comfortable home in Sioux Center, where they have since resided. A kind neighbor, a loving husband and father, Mr. Schut will be missed not only by his immediate family but by many friends who valued his kindly smile and greeting, and admired his upright life. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1:30 at the home and at 2:30 at the First Reformed church of which he was a faithful member, with Rev. Lubbers, former pastor, officiating.
