Coon Rapids Enterprise March 24, 1944 Page 8 Adolphus McLaughlin, one of the oldest settlers in this locality, passed away at the Carroll Hospital on March 14th, 1944, at the age of 84 years and 11 months. Mr. McLaughlin was born April 17, 1859, in Knox County, Illinois. When he was eight years old. his family came to Carol County, Iowa, settling on the prairie in a log cabin two miles east of Coon Rapids. On January 25, 1882, he married Della Ayers at Carroll, Iowa. To this union seven children were born: Freddie Leslie, who died at the age of five; Bessie Smith of Junction City, Oregon; Walter, of Richmond, Calif.; Nora Hufferd, Irene Bower and Anderson McLaughlin of Coon Rapids, and Hazel Miller of Ames. Besides these children. He leaves to mourn his passing three brothers, Will, of Parry, Frank of Waterloo, and John of Coon Rapids; some nieces and nephews, twenty-six grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Stanley Hunt, pastor of the Church of Christ, at the Coder Funeral Home last Friday afternoon. Casket bearers were Otis Teter, Tom McQueen, Donald Williams, Roy Graves and Estus Cretsinger. Mrs. Charles Rippey, Mrs. Clarence Scott and Mrs. Lawrence Smith sang hymns accompanied by Mrs. Donald Ridgeway. Interment was in the Coon Rapids Cemetery. Though his passing was sudden, the spirit, the sincerity, the infinite humanness of the man remain, and he will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
