Description	:	Coon Rapids Enterprise November 26, 1915 Mrs. Mary Clay, mother of the McLaughlin boys, died Monday morning at her home in Coon Rapids. She had been in failing health for a number of years and of late declined rapidly. She was among the oldest settlers in the locality and well respected. She was an active member during health of the Christian church by which, as well as many friends, and relatives she will be greatly missed. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Read More	Coon Rapids Enterprise November 26, 1915 Mrs. Mary Clay, mother of the McLaughlin boys, died Monday morning at her home in Coon Rapids. She had been in failing health for a number of years and of late declined rapidly. She was among the oldest settlers in the locality and well respected. She was an active member during health of the Christian church by which, as well as many friends, and relatives she will be greatly missed. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Miller from the Christian church Wednesday afternoon, the church being crowded with sympathetic friends. Miss Mary Roberts was born in Ohio in 1830, being in her 85th year at the time of her death. She was married to Mr. James McLaughlin in Ohio in 1850. From Ohio they moved to Indiana and from Indiana to Knox county, Illinois, and from Illinois to Carroll county, Iowa, in 1867, thus belong among the earliest settlers of the county. Mr. McLaughlin died in 1877. She was again married to Mr. John Clay who died in Nebraska several years ago. She was the mother of eight children—Aquila, who lives at Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Chauncy, (Anson, the latter dying in youth,) Dolph, James, John, William and Frank, all the children living being present at the funeral. Many years ago Mrs. Clay kindly took a homeless girl into her home, Sarah Hardesty at the age of ten, who later was married to Burt Curl, both of whom making their home with Mrs. Clay for some time after marriage, but who now live in Washington. The deceased left, besides her sons and their families to mourn her death, twenty two grand children and twenty six great grand children. She was laid to rest in the Coon Rapids cemetery
