The sole occupants of the vehicle driven by Manering, they became Allen County's first fatalities of the new year. The accident occurred at 2:08 a.m. Sunday, about five miles east of Lima. Coroner Richard J. Biery, called to the scene by sheriff's deputies, said the couple both died of broken necks and fractured skulls. "Apparently they died instantly and didn't know what happened," the coroner said. Manering's body was wrapped around the utility pole and could not be removed until a wrecker had pulled the car from around the pole. The late model convertible, driven east by Manering, skidded broadside into the utility pole located 90 feet east of the east entrance to Bethlehem cemetery, three-tenths of a mile east of Cool Rd. The car ran off the left side of the pavement 240 feet west of the east side of the cemetery fence and then skidded broadside in deep snow for 90 feet before striking the pole. Manering was trapped behind the wheel by the pole which pushed the left frame of the car sideways until it touched the right frame. The girl was thrown from the car and was lying in the snow with her head near the rear wheel of the car. The impact did not break the pole but a fuse to a transformer mounted near the top of the pole was damaged and residences in the rural area were without electricity for more than an hour and one-half until repairs were made. Two Auglaize County men told sheriff's deputies they witnessed the fatal accident. John C. Kanter, Rt. 5, Wapakoneta, and Donald J. Metz, Rt. 2, Wapakoneta, said they were traveling west and were meeting the fatal car when the accident occurred. "Victim's car coming toward us was weaving all over the road and just before they got to us they slid in the ditch and hit the light pole," Metz said. Kanter said, "Car coming toward us was going from one side to the other then slid into pole." The demolished car could not be towed from the scene and had to be loaded onto the back of a truck. Sunday afternoon the bodies were transferred from the Chiles & Son Funeral Home, where they were taken following the crash. The Crisp girl's body was taken to the Price Funeral Home in Kenton where friends may call after 7 tonight. She was born in Hardin County just outside Kenton, was 19 years old, and was employed by the RBM Co. in Kenton. She is survived by a husband, Bernard Eugene Crisp, and a two-year-old son, Bernard Eugene, Jr.; a sister, Patricia, brothers Richard and Gary; father Willis O. Fay of W. Carrollton and step-mother Virginia Mae Fay, 2 nieces and 2 nephews and several uncles and aunts. Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Price Funeral Home. The minister has not yet been selected. Burial will be in the Grove Cemetery at Kenton. Manering's body was removed to the Hanson Funeral Home at Alger where friends may call after 7 tonight. His occupation was farming and he lived with his father at Kenton Rt. 2 (4 miles southeast of McGuffey). He served in the armed services on Guam after graduation from McGuffey-McDonald High School in 1954. He is survived by his father, Eira, mother, Mrs. Wendell Harper, sister, Mrs. Miles Sheldon; a niece, Leeann, and several uncles and aunts. Services will be at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Hanson Funeral Home with the Rev. Willard Thomas of Harrod Congregational Church officiating.
