His body was found in an unconscious condition in an upper room of the store building. A physician was summoned immediately and on examination, he pronounced it a case of suicide by a twenty two rifle bullet. He was born and reared in this community, was the oldest son of the late Samuel Sullenberger and Mrs. Ootavia Northen Sullenberger, prominent family identified with the early history and development of this part of the county. When a young man, a partnership was formed with the late W. Hampton Matheny under the style of Don Sullenberger & Co., on the corner of Main and Spruce streets. Later he was connected with the V. B. Bishop store. Thirty years ago the Highland Mercantile Co. was established, with his brother, Lloyd Sullenberger, as partner, a business which continued until the time of his death. In connection with their mercantile business, the brothers were engaged in the livestock business, specializing in purebred Hereford cattle, and in both businesses were eminently successful. Regarded as a shrewd business man, honest and upright in all his dealings, charitable in his views with a desire to be of help to his fellowman, he made for himself a prominent place in his county. He was of a literary nature, was well informed, being a great reader. He contributed very liberally of his means to all civic calls as well as any needy causes, he deemed worthy. During the World War, he headed the local Red Cross, and under his wise leadership more than double the quota for the county was raised. For many years he was a member of the county school board, and largely due to his vision, the present High School building was erected. He was one of the largest contributors to the building fund, and today the school edifice stands as a monument to his untiring energy. He was well informed on all horticultural matters and when any plans were made for some civic planting or beautification of town projects was mentioned, he was among the first to encourage and cooperate. The deceased is survived by his wife, who before marriage was Miss Mary Madge Seybert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Seybert of "Seybert Hills'', Strait Creek. Three daughters and five sons survive: Mrs. T. H. Anderson, of Lawrenceville: Miss Sara Sullenberger and Miss Mary Madge Sullenberger of Monterey; Jack, Lynn, Don Jr., Joe and Harmon B. (Pete) Sullenberger, all of Monterey except Lynn who is a member of the United States navy now stationed at Boston. Also surviving are two brothers, Carl Sullenberger of Alexandria, and Lloyd Sullenberger, postmaster of Monterey, and one half brother, S. Lee Sullenberger of California, and one granddaughter Anne Merriwether Andersen of Lawrenceville. Funeral services were conducted from his late residence on Spruce Street Monday afternoon at two-thirty, by Rev. J. H. Light, assisted by Revs. A. E. Johnson and C. B. Gibbs. Mr. Johnson read "The House by the Side of the Road" by Foss, following the Scripture reading. "Abide with Me" was sung as a duet by Mrs. J. S. Hansel and Mrs. R. C. Jones. Interment was made in the family plot in Monterey Cemetery.
