Description	:	Negley, Ohio - Don W. "PeeWee" Dickey, 95, of North Front Street, passed away at 8:39 p.m., Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at the Salem Regional Medical Center, where he had been a patient. Don W. "Peewee" Dickey was born in Negley on November 6, 1919, the son of the late William A. and Inez Young Dickey, and lived most of his life in Negley. Read More	Negley, Ohio - Don W. "PeeWee" Dickey, 95, of North Front Street, passed away at 8:39 p.m., Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at the Salem Regional Medical Center, where he had been a patient. Don W. "Peewee" Dickey was born in Negley on November 6, 1919, the son of the late William A. and Inez Young Dickey, and lived most of his life in Negley. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marilynn Carson Dickey two days after they had celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on April 12, 2009, as well as a granddaughter, Dawn Rae Yenges, four brothers, Edward M. Dickey, Gilbert Young, Arnold R. Dickey, and Robert S. Lawrence; and a sister, Virginia Norton. Peewee is survived by a son, Don W. "Skip" (Terri) Dickey, San Antonio, TX; two daughters, Gretchen Lynn (Jim) Smith, Richland Hill, TX and Cindy (Tim) Figley, East Palestine, eight grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. He enjoyed his family life, having made many fishing trips to Wisconsin and Canada through the years. Peewee taught his children to be competitors and champions. He played everything he did to win or be the best. Baseball, bowling, or golf helped show his children how. He was a champion in sports, as a fan, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Peewee was loved by all, and friendly to all. He was a great role model for all, and he never lost his sense of humor. A World War II veteran, he served in the 32nd Troop Carrier Squadron as a radio operator on C 47 airplanes, seeing service in Africa, Sicily, Italy, England, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Germany, logging some 1500 hours flight time in his twenty-eight months over seas. While stationed in Castlevetrano, Sicily on December 8th, 1943, his squadron had the honor of parading for review by President Roosevelt, in route to meet with Generals Eisenhower, Patton, and Clark, and most of the commanders of the various troops in the area. This was the President's first trip on foreign ground, and he was in route to Tehran to meet with England's prime minister, Winston Churchill and Russia's Stalin, to go over plans for the operations of the allied forces. He was awarded the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Presidential Citation Medal with one oak leaf, the Mediterranean European Theatre Ribbon with seven battle stars, and the French Government Medal for the Participation on D-Day. Peewee had been employed with the Hydril Company, Rochester, PA, the L.W. Nash Company, East Palestine, and as an insurance agent with the Federal Kemper Insurance Company. He was instrumental along with a few other residents of Negley in the formation of the Negley Volunteer Fire Department in the late 1940's. A charter member of the department, he served as treasurer for the Fire Department for fifty-one years. He served on the Board of Directors for the East Palestine Camp Fire Girls, where his wife served as a leader for several years. He joined the Negley United Methodist Church in 1931, and was proud of his church as a life time active member. He bowled in the Salem Area Bowling Association for some forty years, having served on their Board of Directors for several terms, and was inducted into the Salem Area Bowling Association Hall of Fame. He was awarded a trophy for the highest set ever rolled at Randall's Lanes, a 697 in the 1962-63 season in the inter-city league. In 1981 he won the Ohio State Senior Olympics Bowling title at Cuyahoga Falls in the 60-65 age group with a 689 series. He managed the Mackall Motors Little League baseball team in East Palestine for several years. A member of the East Palestine Country Club for over fifty years, he played in the club's golf league as well as the Brittain Motors Wednesday Night golf league. He had scored three holes-in-one, all on three different holes. He also won the Ohio Senior Olympics Championship, also in 1981 in the 60-65 age group at Akron, shooting a 33 score. On June 21, 1994, he was able to play a round of golf with Arnold Palmer at Squaw Creek Country Club, Vienna. Military rites will be conducted by the combined units of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4579 and the American Legion Post 31.. Burial will be in Crest Haven Memorial Gardens, New Waterford.
