Description	:	Donald Carlson passed away on February 19, 2009. Don Carlson was born on Pomona Ave. in Chico, CA on August 12, 1912, the second youngest of 11 children to Charles and Martha Carlson. At the age of six, Don's father died from work related injuries leaving Martha to raise all of the children on her own. Don Carlson was born on Pomona Ave. in Chico, CA on August 12, 1912, the second youngest of 11 children to Charles and Martha Carlson. At the age of six, Don's father died from work related injuries leaving Martha to raise all of the children on her own. Every one of the children, no matter their age, went to work to help support the family. Don attended Chico Schools and graduated from Chico High in 1931. It was at Chico High where Don met the love of his life, Margaret Thomason. Upon graduation from high school, Don worked several jobs Including farming with his older brothers, the Chico Soda Works and the Chico Airport Fire Department. In June of 1936, Don and Margret were married and began building their new home in Chico. The home was completed just in time for the birth of their first child, a daughter, Anne. In 1945, at the age of 33, Don was drafted into the Navy. Don served in the South Pacific until the end of WW II and was honorably discharged In 1946. When Don returned home to Chico, his good friend, Francis Cox, who owned a jewelry store, asked Don to come work for him. Francis then taught Don step by step how to repair watches. This was the start of Don's 45 year career as a watch maker and jeweler in Downtown Chico. In January of 1948, Don and Margaret welcomed their second child, a son, Harold. After working many years for Cox Jewelers, the business closed and Don went to work for Weisfield's Jewelers, where he was manager and then on to Clifford's Jewelry. Don was an avid outdoorsman. He and Margaret enjoyed spending time with their family at their cabin in Jonesville, restoring and building furniture, participating in church events, and attending sports events. When Margaret's health began to decline, Don retired form Clifford's to take care of his sweetheart full time. Don and Margaret were a strong team for 58 years until her passing in July of 1994. After Margaret's passing, Don moved to Healdsburg, CA to be near his son Harold and his family. In the fall of 2007, Don moved back to Chico to be near his family, all of who now lived In the greater Chico area. In 1958, Don joined the Masonic Lodge and during the summer of 2008, Don Carlson received his 50 year membership pin. He was very proud of this achievement and wore his pin with pride everyday and loved getting comments on it. Don lived a long, wonderful and healthy life watching his children grow up to be successful, attending all four of his granddaughters high school and college graduations and being a part of his four great-grandchildren's lives. Don is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Tom Hill; son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Nancy Carlson; granddaughters, Charlene and husband Andy Harrison and Becky Bill; granddaughters, Kristin and Nikki Carlson; great-grandchildren, Lindsay and Alyssa Harrison and Dana and Colin Bill. A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at the Chico Masonic Center, 1110 W. East Avenue. Donations can be made to the Shrine Children's Hospital, 2425 Stockton Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95817. Condolences may be sent online at www.bidwellChapel.com.
