Donald Burton "Butch" Whitacre passed away peacefully on Friday, Febuary 5, 2016 at Taylor House in Des Moines, IA surrounded by his wife and family. Donald was born July 23, 1929 to Thomas and Lucille Whitacre in Centerville, Iowa. Donald met the love of his life in Cincinnati, IA, his wife Lenora Sparks. Donald and Lenora were married in 1946. In 1947, Donald enlisted in the United States Army and served with distinction in the 82nd Airborne Division. In 1955, Donald and Lenora moved to Des Moines, where Donald worked as a delivery driver for Butternut bread, and later became an Insurance agent for various companies. Throughout his life Donald enjoyed golfing, playing cribbage (and winning - Woo! Hoo!) and spending time with his family. Donald was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Lucille Whitacre; his infant daughter Cynthia; his son Randy; 3 brothers (Bill, Tom, and James); 3 sisters (Emily, Mary & Jean); and his infant grandson Travis Whitacre. Donald is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lenora (Sparks) Whitacre; son Donald (Connie) Whitacre; daughter Deborah Whitacre; sister Pat Whitacre; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a host of other family and beloved friends.
