Donald Kortje, son of Carl and Linda (Braasch) Kortje, was born November 25, 1930, at Pierce, Nebraska. Donald grew up in the Pierce community, where he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hadar. Donald attended and graduated from Pierce High School in 1948, then served his country during the Korean War, from 1951 to 1955, in the United States Air Force. During his four years in the service, 30 months of his time in the military was served in Japan. Following his Honorable Discharge, Donald attended and graduated from Norfolk Junior College in Norfolk, Nebraska. On October 24, 1957, he was married to Beverly Retzlaff. The couple was blessed six children: Kathryn, Donna, David, Kimberly, Thomas, and Tiffany. Donald and Beverly lived in several different communities where they raised their family. They initially lived in Norfolk, where Donald was employed by Nash-Finch Wholesale Distributors, and later moved to Grand Island, Nebraska, where he transferred within the company to be a produce buyer. The family then moved to South Sioux City, Nebraska, where Donald worked for a food brokerage, selling fresh produce to area grocery stores. For three years, the Kortje family resided in Millard, Nebraska, where Donald worked for another food brokerage firm. They then returned to Norfolk, where Donald worked for food brokers until retiring in 2000. Donald was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church-WELS, holding various offices at several different churches where the family lived. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend who will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Donald went to be with his beloved Savior on Thursday, September 6, 2012, in Norfolk, Nebraska, at the age of 81 years. Donald is survived by: …his wife of over 54 years, Beverly Kortje of Norfolk, Nebraska; …children (and grandchildren), ……David (Sandra) Kortje of Benton, Kansas ……… (children, Alisha and Josiah), ……Kimberly Kumwenda of Lincoln, Nebraska ……… (children, Nathan, Emma, Tia, and Noah), ……Thomas Kortje of Omaha, Nebraska, and ……Tiffany (Joe) Tichota of Norfolk, Nebraska ……… (child, Kiran); …one great-grandson, Landon Trotter; …sisters, ……Phyllis Walth of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, ……LaJean Cowan of Norfolk, Nebraska, and ……Sharon Dolesh of Pierce, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by: …two infant daughters, Kathryn and Donna; …two grandsons, Joshua Kortje and Caleb Kortje; and …his parents, Carl and Linda Kortje. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday, September 9, 2012, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Brockhaus-Howser-Fillmer Funeral Home in Norfolk. Funeral services for Donald Kortje, age 81 of Norfolk, Nebraska, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 10, 2012, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Norfolk. Pastor James Westendorf will officiate. A Graveside Service will be held at 9:00 a.m. Monday at the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Norfolk prior to funeral services. Military Honors will be conducted by VFW Post 1644 and American Legion Post 16, both of Norfolk, and the Offutt Air Force Base Honor Guard.
