Read More	Died in service to the USA∼In Memory of U.S. Army Air Force Staff Sergeant Donald Darrell Jerred Custer, South Dakota Custer County October 8, 1924 - June 21, 1944 Killed in Action over Berlin, Germany Donald Darrell Jerred was born on October 8, 1924, in Gregory, South Dakota. He and his family moved to Custer County when Donald was four years old. They lived in Pleasant Valley, where Donald attended the 12-Mile school. The family later moved to Custer, where Donald completed his sophomore year of high school. The family then moved to Golden, Colorado, where it is believed Donald completed high school before he entered airplane machinist school in September of 1942. On April 27, 1943, Donald enlisted in the Air Corps at Fort Logan, Colorado. He was trained in Fresno, California, and sent to Tyndall Field, Florida, where he received his wings. Donald was sent overseas on April 20, 1944. When he got there, he joined a group of men on a B-24 Liberator. He saw 19 missions. On the second foray of the 19th mission, he and his men were shot down just south of Berlin, Germany. It was told enemy planes were surrounding them. Seven men were taken prisoner and three died on the plane. One of the men who were killed was Donald. Donald's mom received a letter from Carl Hartquist, the pilot of the plane on which Donald was killed. He wrote, "Darrell was my favorite on the crew. He was always so pleasant, knew his work so well and always ready to do a little extra." Mrs. Jerred received a telegram from the government saying Staff Sergeant Donald D. Jerred was missing in action June 21, 1944. Mrs. Jerred's love for her son was so deep she had to know where he was. She wrote a letter to the Magistrate in Berlin, Germany, hoping to hear something. On August 3, 1946, the Police Secretary wrote saying the three Americans she spoke of were mortally wounded and laid to rest in a local church's burial grounds. She then informed the Adjutant General of their burial location. Shortly after, Mrs. Jerred received a letter in German saying United States officials were exhuming the bodies. They took them to an American Cemetery in New Villeen Condroz, Belgium. Later Donald's mom insisted he return home with the other two boys. His remains rest in the family plot in Custer Cemetery, Custer, South Dakota, next to a sister and a brother. Mrs. Jerred eventually got word Donald was not missing in action but had been killed in action on June 21, 1944. He had been awarded air medal, oak leaf cluster, and Purple Heart. Donald's sister June states, "Medals don't take the place of real people." Mrs. Jerred had three sons and a son-in-law in the service in WW II. Today Donald is survived by his sister, June, and his brother, Lowell, who was in the Navy in WW II.
