White passed away at Garfield County Memorial Hospital on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, surrounded by his family. Don was born April 14, 1918, to Frank and Nellie Myott White in Ewan, Wash. Don was very active in Boy Scouts and earned his Eagle Scout badge in 1934. While in the Scout program, Don saved a young child from drowning and was given a Life-Saving Certificate from the National Court of Honor in Washington, D.C. In 1937, the year Don graduated from high school, his parents bought a farm near Chattaroy, Wash. Don worked with his parents on that farm until he received his military draft notice and served in the U.S. Army in the finance department. In 1961, Don went to work with the Soil Conservation Service, working in Okanogan and Colville, Wash., as well as Palouse and Pomeroy, where he retired in 1988. He married Dorothy McKenzie in 1969; their marriage ended in divorce. Don married Diane Shelton Kazda in 1982. Don and Diane enjoyed traveling and spending time with their family. Don and Diane attended the United Methodist Church. Don kept busy after his retirement by serving on the city council, the Palouse Economic Development Council and was an active member and chairman of the Garfield County Health District. He was on the Pomeroy Beautification Committee, the Pomeroy Service Club, served as Santa Claus and was a Boy Scout leader. He also served on numerous other boards in his younger years. He was on the board of supervisors for the Northeast Conservation Area and was chairman of the board covering Pend Oreille, Stevens and Spokane counties. He also served on the Farmers Home Administration Board, the Spokane County Planning Commission and was an active Washington State Grange member. He also drove the county van for the senior center for awhile. Don loved to exercise and garden, and was often seen out for his morning walk or working in his garden. He also enjoyed his woodworking shop, especially making toys for his grandchildren. He is survived by his stepsons, Steve Kazda of Pomeroy, Gary Kazda of Tulsa, Okla., and David Kazda of Spokane; his stepdaughters, Cathy Kazda Roy of Lewiston, Caroline Kazda Moore of Pomeroy, and Merri Lee McKenzie Keatts of Cheney, Wash., and their spouses; he enjoyed his 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; also surviving are his brothers, Ed and Curt White; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Diane; parents Frank and Nellie White; brothers George, Cecil and Morris Berry White; and sister Sarah Norby. A service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Richardson-Brown Funeral Home in Pomeroy. Burial will follow at Pomeroy City Cemetery, and immediately after the burial a dinner at the United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions can be made to Garfield County Hospital and Long Term Care or to the Pomeroy Senior Center.
