Posted: Friday, August 20, 2010 12:00 am Dorothy Glee Shelton passed away Monday, Aug. 16, 2010, peacefully at the home of her daughter, in Cheney. She was born Aug. 29, 1937, in Missoula, Mont., to loving and caring parents, Burnell (Bun) and Kathryn (Kay) Kramer. Dorothy, her parents and sibling, Valerie, later moved to Palouse, where she attended school and met her closest friends, Vonda Watson Brantner, Cleo Dial Swanson and Shirley Kreyssler Girsberger. Dorothy graduated from Palouse High School in 1955. She married Gene I. McKenzie, a Palouse native, Nov. 26, 1955, where they established a farm business and a family. She suffered greatly early in life, with the deaths of her beloved children, Karen Jean McKenzie, born Feb. 13, 1957, and died Dec. 6, 1965, and infant Edward Allen McKenzie, born Feb. 16, 1963, and died Feb. 20, 1963. The couple had two additional children, Merri Lee, born Feb. 26, 1960, and Pamela Ann, born Nov. 1, 1964. Gene died early in life, due to an accident in November 1966. Through the difficulties and to the end of her life, she kept a very strong spiritual faith. Dorothy moved with her daughters to Pomeroy in 1968, and later pursued her nursing degree. She graduated from Walla Walla Community College as a registered nurse in 1976. Dorothy loved being a nurse and dedicated her work to elder care, working at the Garfield County Hospital for several years and at Cheney Care Center until the time of her death. It was in Pomeroy that she met the love of her life, Elbert (Abe) Shelton, and they married May 30, 1981. The couple remained married until his death Jan. 7, 1991. She missed him greatly and will be buried next to him at the Pomeroy City Cemetery. Dorothy was known for her strong work ethic; she loved caring for the elderly and seeing her grandchildren regularly. She often commented that she was fortunate to have lived close to her daughters and their families. She adored her grandchildren, all of whom love and miss her dearly. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Merri Lee McKenzie and Ray Keatts of Cheney; grandchildren and their spouses, Wendi Keatts and Ray Watson of Aurora, Ore., Sherri Keatts and Donn Edwards of Roseburg, Ore., and Andy and Angela Keatts of Cheney; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Eric Missett of Knoxville, Tenn.; grandchildren Kayla McKeirnan of Atlanta, Ga., and Matt McKeirnan of Kennewick; two beautiful great-grandchildren, Jessica Scoggin and Josephine Watson; her sister, Valerie Brown of Las Vegas; her lifelong friends, Vonda and Gail Brantner, Shirley Girsberger, and Cleo Swanson; she loved and is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and her work family. A great-grandson, Ben Scoggin, also preceded her in death. Burial will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Pomeroy City Cemetery with a gathering at Rather Bees in Pataha at 3 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to Chapter FN, P.E.O. in c/o: Sandy Barr, P.O.
