He was born January 25, 1923, at rural White City to Russell F. and Edna Mary (Kohler) Hunter. He attended grade school at the Rural Red Top School and graduated from White City in 1940. Read More	Donald Deviere Hunter, 89, of Council Grove, KS, passed away Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at Council Grove Healthcare Center. He was born January 25, 1923, at rural White City to Russell F. and Edna Mary (Kohler) Hunter. He attended grade school at the Rural Red Top School and graduated from White City in 1940. He married Virginia Blanchard of Council Grove on February 6, 1943. Don attended K-State until he was called to the United States Army on January 4, 1944. He served in Signal Corp as a Teletype Operator until May 1946. When he left the service, Don worked with his father at Hunter & Sons until March 1948, before working for Bert Grauel Chevrolet as a Salesman and Shop Forman. He moved his family to Council Grove in March 1948 and purchased the Pontiac, GMC Truck and John Deere franchise from L.H. Rumsey. He sold John Deere in 1962 to Lloyd Young and purchased Chevrolet, Oldsmobile franchise in 1965. The business was known as Hunter Sales Company. He sold this to Andy Carrier. Don later developed the land which is known as Lake Side Homes, Inc. He also received his Realtor’s License and developed cottages at the City Lake. Don and Virginia moved to Alamo Country Club in Alamo, TX in 1989, where he was very active in golf and other committees. They returned to Council Grove in 2011, to be near their family. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, past commander of the American Legion Post 121, past member of Council Grove Rotary Club and the Council Grove Country Club. Don was voted to the Board of Alamo Country Club in 1993, where he served for four years. Don was preceded in death by his parents, son Douglas and brother Lloyd. He is survived by his wife Virginia, of the home; son Donald Gary Hunter & wife Pam, of Mesa, AZ; grandchildren Shawn Hunter (Deidre), Shannon Short (David) and Ashlee Nelson (Matt); great-grandchildren Dillon and Daulton Hunter, Molly, Hunter, and Lillian (Lilly) Short, Alexandria (Lexie) and Sophia (Sophie) Nelson; sister Shirley Hickman (George), of Council Grove, Russell Hunter, Jr., of Fort Collins, CO and Calvin Hunter (Eunice), of Council Grove. At his request, Don was cremated. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date, which will be announced. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and they may be sent in care of Penwell-Gabel, PO Box 273, Council Grove, KS 66846.
