He was born and raised in the Gibson country of Sweet Grass County, attending school at Knob Hill, Rapelje, and Big Timber. In January 1956, Don entered the United States Marine Corps, serving at Camp Pendleton, California until his Honorable discharge in 1959. Fellow Marine Bill States, introduced Don to his sister, Dianne States. Don and Dianne were married on February 7, 1959, in Oakland, California.
