He was born Nov. 23, 1923, in Ottumwa to Thomas and Sabina Ruffing Gettings. He married Beverly Gustavison Sept 6, 1947. She preceded him in death Feb. 8, 1988. He married Mary Callas Dec. 1, 1991. A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1942, he worked for 38 years at John Deere Ottumwa Works. During his long and distinguished political career, he served in the House of Representatives and Iowa State Senate for 22 years, retiring in 2001, and was delegate to the National Democratic Convention. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, a member and board member of U.A.W. Local #74, a board member of John Deere Credit Union and Iowa Association of Credit Unions. Surviving are his wife, Mary; a son, Gregory(Diane)Gettings of Boonville; a daughter, Melinda Hodge of Blue Springs, MO; two stepsons, George(Wanita)Callas of Olathe, Kan., and Steve(Ann)Callas of Portland, Ore.; a stepdaughter, Marie Callas of West Des Moines; five grandchildren, Jeremy, Ryan, Jami, Kathryn and Samuel; four stepgrandchildren, Amy, Nicholas, Sammy and Alana; and a great-granddaughter, Madison. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Geoffrey Gettings; a son-in-law, Russell Hodge; four brothers, Joseph, Lawrence, Lou and Bill Gettings; and a sister, Ellen Gephart. Funeral Mass will be 1 pm Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Hilgendorf presiding. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. Visitation will start at 11 am today at Reece Funeral Home. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 7 pm at the funeral home with the family present following the service until 9 pm. Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.
