He loved all that he and Jo did throughout their years because he had found his soulmate in Jo. Don had worked at age 12 sorting cakes for Dolly Madison. He also worked for various farmers and at Dick Frost's Standard Service Station. He had worked 30 years at John Deere Ottumwa Works, retiring in 1996. After his retirement, Don and Jo started traveling south for the winters. Their first trip was to Florida. The rest of their retirement winters were spent in Texas. He loved motorcycles in his younger years and told many stories of events at Lentner's Motorcycle shop. He even built his own 3-wheeler out of miscellaneous parts that he accumulated and enjoyed taking all the neighborhood kids for rides. He was the kind of person who could do, or build, anything he wanted. One time his neighbors told him he couldn't build an in-ground swimming pool, but he proved them wrong. Anytime anybody needed help with anything, he was there to help. He loved mushroom hunting in the spring and was a member of Ducks Unlimited for many years. He enjoyed hunting ducks, deer, fishing and did a lot of golfing in Texas. Don was a happy-go-lucky type of person and always had a joke to tell. Don will be dearly missed by his wife, Jo; children, Andrea (Harold) Rosson of Hamilton, IL, John and Jeff (Dana) Pierson, both of Ottumwa, Joseph (Denise) Pierson and Julie Johnston Scully, both of Urbandale, Ronald (Laanui) Johnston of Hilo, HI; 12 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Herbert Hornback; twin brothers, Larry and Gary Pierson; a half-sister, Marian Smith and her husband, Kermit. Visitation will be open after 9 a.m. Wednesday, September 22nd at Reece Funeral Home with his family greeting friends from noon until 1 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 22nd at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Hornback officiating. For those unable to attend, the service may be viewed live on the Reece Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties.
