Roberts on November 6, 1949 in Hemingford, Nebraska. They were married for 53 years. His family moved to the Hemingford area in 1931 where they started to farm. Read More	Donald J. Haas died Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at his home in Hemingford, Nebraska.Don was born August 29, 1921 in Wilber, Nebraska to John and Rose (Kovar) Haas. Don married Lucille L. Roberts on November 6, 1949 in Hemingford, Nebraska. They were married for 53 years. His family moved to the Hemingford area in 1931 where they started to farm. He attended rural schools and graduated from Hemingford High School in 1939. After he graduated he took a job at the local grocery store cutting meat to help the family buy milk and eggs. His dad later had a bumper crop of wheat and rewarded Don with $400; it was then that he bought his treasured 1941 Harley Davidson motorcycle. Don served in the US Navy from September 2, 1942 to March 7, 1946 during World War II as a radar technician on a Navy ship tender. When he came back from the service he worked with his dad at the current home place 4 miles south of town to start farming. Don served on the Hemingford School Board, the Hemingford Co-op Telephone Board, the Certified Potato Growers Council and various United Methodist Church positions. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #9 and a 60-year member of the United Methodist Church. For the past 80 plus years Don enjoyed working with his family growing a variety of crops that included potatoes, until 1987, beets, corn, beans, sunflowers and wheat. Some of his passions were JD Green, GM vehicles with some Fords being mixed in, combining wheat, working in the shop and the Harley Davidson rumble. Don is survived by: daughter and son-in-law, Lynette and Bob Smith of Brookings, S.D.; son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Sandy Haas of Hemingford; son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Lisa Haas of Hemingford; sisters, Irene Christensen of Hemingford, Shirley Schultz of Billings, MT and Betty Hucke of Chadron, NE.; grandchildren, Scott and wife Kathy Smith, Brent Smith, Kurt and wife Melanie Smith, Kory and wife Kim Haas, Kara and husband Logan Fisher, John and wife Jaci Haas, Lance Haas, and Jordan and Joe Haas; great grandchildren, Tayten and Jayce Haas, Bailey and Ashtyn Fisher, Carson, Anthony and Kamryn Haas, and Celia Smith; and special care givers, Carol Danbom and LeaAnn Bauersachs. Don was preceded in death by: parents; wife, Lucille Haas; brothers, Charles and Dallas Haas and sister Dorothy Stumf. Burial was in the Hemingford Cemetery, Hemingford, NE. with Military Graveside Rites.
