Description	:	Donald "Smokey" Steever, long-time Lennox businessman and fire chief, died last Friday, September 28, at Sioux Valley Hospital, succumbing to a lengthy illness. He attained the age of 63 years, 11 months and 14 days. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Lennox Volunteer Fire Department, and casket bearers were Oscar Skie, Jack Steever, Otis Eddy, Gerald Rogers, Albert Hagemeyer, and John Ludens. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Lennox Volunteer Fire Department, and casket bearers were Oscar Skie, Jack Steever, Otis Eddy, Gerald Rogers, Albert Hagemeyer, and John Ludens. Donald Joseph "Smokey" Steever was born on a farm east of Lennox on October 14, 1926, the son of Henry and Minnie (Naatjes) Steever. He attended rural school and graduated from Lennox High School in 1944. While in high school he excelled in athletics and participated in other activities as well. On December 28, 1950, he was united in marriage to Margreta Hass in Sioux Falls. They lived in Lennox their entire married life, during which time he was associated with the bulk oil business. Ill health forced his retirement in November of 1987. Smokey was a member of First English Lutheran Church, a member of the Lennox Volunteer Fire Department, and the Lennox Masonic Lodge, as well as the Sioux Falls Scottish Rite Consistory and the El Riad Shrine. He also served as a Boy Scout leader for several years, and was an ardent outdoor sportsman, enjoying hunting and fishing very much. But Smokey is best remembered by many for his dedicated service as the local fire chief for 20 years. Even after failing health prompted him to resign that position; he continued his interest in the fire department and helped the local firemen as much as possible. He was preceded in death by his father on August 16, 1983, and one brother, Verlyn Eugene on Aug. 3, 1938. Survivors include his widow, Margreta; two sons: Barry Steever of Fort Dix, N.J., and Gordon of Bemidji, Minn.; a daughter, Mrs. Arland (Ellen) Abbas of Lennox; three grand-children: Chad, Anna and Todd Abbas; two step-grandchildren: Katie and Brandon Vreuls; his mother, Minnie Steever of Lennox; two brothers: Calvin Steever of Santa Rosa, Calif., and James Steever of Lennox; a sister, Mrs. Arlo (Vonelle) Larson, Lennox.
