He was raised on the farm in rural Byron with his nine brothers and sisters and he began farming with his father at a very young age. He was raised on the farm in rural Byron with his nine brothers and sisters and he began farming with his father at a very young age. Don was a lifelong farmer; the land and taking care of his livestock were his passions. He married Carol Klusman on November 24, 1963, and was blessed with three children, Jim, Dean and Angie. Raising and mentoring his children was his primary focus. He and Carol were members of the same card club for over 40 years, even continuing once they moved to Omaha. Don was also an avid bowler, bowling with his church group for many years. Don never knew a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
