Description	:	Donald Louis Stokes, Sr., 96-1/2 years old, passed away at home peacefully during the night of Friday, July 27, 2012 in Susanville, Calif. He was born Dec. 8, 1915 in Valier, Mont. to Hyrum and Millie May (Jones) Stokes. The Stokes family moved to California in 1922, and lived around the Granada, Montique area, then to Yreka, where his twin brothers were born in 1926. Don and his father had... Read More	Donald Louis Stokes, Sr., 96-1/2 years old, passed away at home peacefully during the night of Friday, July 27, 2012 in Susanville, Calif. He was born Dec. 8, 1915 in Valier, Mont. to Hyrum and Millie May (Jones) Stokes. The Stokes family moved to California in 1922, and lived around the Granada, Montique area, then to Yreka, where his twin brothers were born in 1926. The family then moved to Gridley, Calif. in 1928, where Don's youngest brother was born. Don attended school in Gridley where he learned auto mechanics, auto body and upholstery work. Don and his father had a business in Gridley which in a way helped them in coming to Susanville, Calif. through the Red River Lumber Company. By accident in 1932, Don met a young Marysville High School girl, Florence Neighbours. They went together about three years and on her graduation night, June 7, 1935 they were married in Yuba City, Calif. They were married until Florence's death in 1999, almost 64 years. Don and his family came to Susanville in 1936. They opened a shop which included upholstery, auto mechanic and body work. Since then, there has almost always been a Stokes descendant that owns a business in Susanville. Don was a World War II veteran. He served in the United States Army as a mechanic, an officer's cook and was an expert rifleman. Don was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing on his boat at the ocean and Eagle Lake. He loved music and played the accordion and sang. Don had a passion for cars and driving. From the time he was nine, he drove anything with a steering wheel and tires. Don was a relief tow truck driver and delivered new cars for Deal and Davie customers. He broke in many zero-mileage Cadillacs. He worked as a body man at Deal and Davie for 17 years. In 1959, Don opened Stokes Body Shop. He could take a car apart to the frame and put it back together. He painted everything from logging trucks, cars, trucks, trailers, to the kitchen sink. Even a spider ended up painted turquoise; he called it "George." Don could tell you stories that you would never imagine. He loved taking pictures and movies. Don and Florence's home was always open to anyone who needed a home, whether it was child care or someplace to stay. In addition to their four children, more than 22 children, plus adults called their house "home." Don was preceded in death by his parents, Hyrum and Millie Stokes; Florence, wife of 64 years; sisters, Alta Miller, Olive Schorzman and Orpha Bake Kiefer; brother, Bob Stokes; and two great-grandsons, Aaren Jones and Wyatt Bell. He is survived by his four children. He is also survived by one foster-son; nine grandchildren. Don is survived by 29 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren; his two brothers. Also a sister-in-law. He has numerous nieces and nephews, three of which live in Susanville. He will be greatly missed. Services were held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, 2012 and Chapel Service was at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, both at the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church. Burial was in Janesville, Ca.
