"Don" Brown, 70, of Mount Pleasant, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at his home. Born Nov. 9, 1933, in New London, he was the son of Joseph Luff and Ida Marie Willey Brown. He married Anna Lee Carnahan on June 9, 1952, in Lake Port, Mich. Mr. Brown was born and raised in New London and was a 1951 graduate of New London High School. He worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for two years. He then served in the Iowa National Guard and worked for the rock quarry, where he helped build roads for the Henry County Maintenance Department for eight years. He worked for Iowa Wesleyan College for nearly 23 years in the maintenance and grounds department and retired as head of the physical plant. He was a member of Community of Christ, where he served as pastor for several years in California and Mount Pleasant. He enjoyed listening to country/western and bluegrass music, playing his guitar, woodworking, fishing and hunting. He was active in fund-raisers and also founded a cancer support group. Survivors include his wife; six daughters, Carol Franklin of Sacramento, Calif., Jeanette Dillon and Mary Smith, both of Winfield, Karen Hunter and Denise Pratt, both of Mount Pleasant, and Theresa Warren of Duluth, Minn.; six sons, Donald Brown, Richard Brown, Daniel Brown and Joe Brown, all of Mount Pleasant, and Robert Brown and Charles Brown, both of Winfield; two sisters, Joan Septer of New London and Mary Sue Moore of Burlington; three brothers, Dan Brown of Mount Hamill, Daryl Brown of Burlington and Bill Brown of New London; 36 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Cremation will be accorded following the visitation. The memorial service for Mr. Brown will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with Elder Larry Jannings and Larry McGuire officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Brooks Cemetery in New London. Memorials have been established for his church and Henry County Relay for Life.
