Description	:	Donald Raymond Ebinger, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully on July 13 at his home in Fountain Hills, Arizona. The burial service will be private. A memorial service is set for Saturday, Septembe r24, 10:30 AM, at First Presbyterian Church Donald was born on April 18, 1923 in Grand Island, Nebraska to Sophia (Wittler) and the Rev. Frederick C. Ebinger. He grew up in several Evangelical United Brethren parsonages in rural eastern Nebraska,graduating from Hoskins High School in 1941. He then studied at Western Union (Westmar) College in Le Mars, Iowa, the University of Wyoming/Laramie while in the US Army, finally in 1947 to earn his baccalaureate degree from Coe College. In1948 he received an MBA with honors from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. On March 20, 1948, he and Ruth Friedrich were married in Omaha, Nebraska. They settled in Cedar Rapids where Don was employed by Bishop Cafeterias as an accountant. When he retired from Bishop Buffets, Inc. in 1986, Don had been Chairman of the Board for ten years. Early in adult life, golf became Don’s activity of choice. Retirement was permission to leave midwest winters behind and play golf all year! Don and Ruth discovered the desert area northeast of Phoenix, Arizona (FountainHills) to be ideal. A brand new home was ready in 1988, and the community, in its early growing stages, welcomed them warmly. At ten years in, the seasonal commuting to Iowa and back was too much; a house in Flagstaff, three hours north, made sense. Desert season, mountain season. Golf and swimming for Don; books, flowers,wildlife, sunrises and sunsets for Ruth. They thrived on the best of each setting, while continuing to host family or guests from home, as well as new friends, neighbors and golf partners. The dimming shadow of Alzheimer’s disease became more pervasive in Ruth, and both new communities proved their mettle in care and compassion, together with family and friends elsewhere. Don spent much of his time and energy caring for her. After Ruth’s death in April, 2006, Don continued in both locales for several years - still playing golf! But health issues prevailed and after considering options, he took an apartment in Fountain Hills year ‘round. No matter what age, Don was ever a true churchman. He demonstrated his theology --convinced that participation, discernment, innovation, and working together were both fuel AND by-product of genuine faith. He embraced commitment at Salem Evangelical United Brethren and First Lutheran Churches (Cedar Rapids), Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church (Fountain Hills), and Peace Lutheran Church (Flagstaff). Don cared deeply for people, and with Ruth, channeled this sense in an avocation that seemed tireless. With the uniqueness he brought to the table, he became observer, advisor, visionary, and leader who helped others realize their education and well-being, their hopes and dreams. No matter -- family, community, church, or world. First Lutheran Church, United Community Services, Churches United, St. Luke’s Health Foundation, and Coe College are among the local organizations he served. Once in Arizona, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran, a neighborhood church joined in ‘88, and then Opportunity International, a microfinance organization that assisted un-and-underserved people in developing countries, supplied new horizons for his energy and focus. It pleased and energized Don to know he made a real difference in people’s lives. He appreciated their stories, and readily shared how those in his own life inspired, guided, and encouraged him. Don is survived by his children, Elizabeth Ebinger Boesen of Penn Yan, NY and David Ebinger of Fountain Hills, AZ and Boone, IA; a granddaughter Karin (Boesen)Earle and husband Joshuah of Syracuse, NY; a granddaughter Bina Mae Emerson Ebinger Sack and her mother, Catharina Sack, of Perth, W. Australia; sister-in-law Marjorie Ebinger of Cedar Rapids; nieces and nephews in many places; and longtime Cedar Rapids friend, Donald Johnson. He was preceded in death by: Ruth Friedrich Ebinger, his wife of 58 years;his parents; brothers Melvin and Irvin, sisters Dorothy Farrington and Velma Goettel; niece Rebecca Ebinger Greer; and ten sisters-and- brothers-in-law.
