Donald Rex Kirby was the son of Joseph Lee and Alma Mary Weaver Kirby. He was raised in the Gilman area and attended school there. He was married to Mary Ann Cook on September 1, 1948 in Leon, Iowa. To this union were born three children; Connie, Dianne and Steve. They made their home in Newburg. He was employed for many years with Cargill in Grinnell and retired in 1992. He then worked part-time as a night watchman at Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company for 10 years. He held a great work ethic while knowing the value of hard work. Rex attended the Hickory Grove Church, rural Newburg and was an active member of the Odd Fellows in Grinnell. He enjoyed watching sports, particularly baseball and playing card games with family and friends. He also enjoyed the outdoors, bird feeding and fishing.
