She was married to Donald Rex Kirby on September 1, 1948 in Leon, Iowa. They made their home on the family farm near Newburg. They were the parents of Connie, Dianne and Steve. She was a homemaker for several years. In 1962 she began working at the Newburg school as a cook. She later was a cook for the Grinnell school. Mary Ann had a strong work ethic, which began at a young age detasseling corn and milking cows. She held a special love for her cats and dogs. Her enjoyments included gardening, canning, cooking, reading, solving puzzles, dancing, and listening to country music.
