Don was welcomed into the world by Mr. and Mrs. Michael Kraxberger on March 10, 1925, in Denver, CO, where he lived and went to school through the tenth grade. Read More	Wenatchee World - Wednesday, August 11, 2010 Don Richard Kay passed away peacefully in Yakima, WA on Saturday, August 7, 2010. Don was welcomed into the world by Mr. and Mrs. Michael Kraxberger on March 10, 1925, in Denver, CO, where he lived and went to school through the tenth grade. The family then relocated to The Dalles, OR, where Don graduated from high school. From there, he attended the University of Oregon in Eugene. A stint in the United States Navy interrupted Don's college education. His career as a submariner during World War II took him to Panama, Alaska and Guam and also allowed him to meet his future wife, Glenda F. Smith, while on leave in Seattle. He married Glenda on September 3, 1947, and resumed his studies, graduating with a degree in business from the U of O in 1948. While a U of O student, he received a Skull and Dagger honorarium as a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. This was a pattern of accomplishment he would follow all his life. After the birth of their first son, the new family moved to Centralia, WA in 1948, and opened Kid's Incorporated, a clothing and toy store. Don led the community development project for the city of Centralia, under the auspices of then Governor Arthur Langley. Don and Glenda had three other children during their seven year stay in Centralia. In 1955, the entire family moved to Wenatchee and the Kays opened another Kid's Inc. They continually diversified their store holdings throughout the next 20 years with Varsity Line, K's Corner, Don Kay's Men's Wear and Webb's Shoppe. After nearly 30 years in the retail business, Don decided to seek new opportunities and became an area representative for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) in 1976. It was a job he relished for 11 years, traveling the five counties of North Central Washington, meeting and greeting small business owners just like him. He retired from NFIB but became restless after a couple years. He ran for, and won, two terms as Chelan County PUD Commissioner, beginning in 1990. He served as Board President in 1994 and 1998, before finally retiring from professional life. He enjoyed his years with the PUD, making many lifelong friends and gaining an extensive education regarding hydro-electric power. Don enjoyed serving his community and his life consisted of a long list of noteworthy efforts including: Wenatchee Youth Baseball President, Wenatchee Chiefs Professional Baseball business manager, Apple Blossom Festival Parade Starter (25 years), Wenatchee Downtown Rotary President, Founding Member, two-time President of the Wenatchee Downtown Business Association and President of Toastmasters. Don's personal life was filled with a love of dogs and cattle - he raised Registered Polled Hereford cattle for 25 years at his Lower Sunnyslope Ranch - as well as traveling and music. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and loved singing in the choir. After Glenda passed away in 2008, Don moved to Yakima to be near his daughter. His life was lonely after the loss of his wife of 60 years, and we know he is rejoicing at being by her side once again. Don is survived by his son, Rich Kay (Nancy) of Kenmore; daughter, Shelley Dix (Russ) of Yakima; special son, Harold Collins (Peggy) of Prosser; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Glenda; their son, Brad; daughter, Cindy; his brother, Edward; and his parents. We extend heartfelt thanks to Cheryl and Del Miles and the caregivers at Lola Kay for their services during this chapter of Dad's life. You are amazing people. Graveside Services will be held at Wenatchee Valley Cemetery on Thursday, August 12, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements by Keith & Keith Funeral Chapel of Yakima, WA.
