Mr. Purling served 30 years in the Navy and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a prisoner of war in Japan during World War II and spent more than three years and four months in forced labor in Japanese coal mines. Read More	CLAY CENTER --- Donald Theodore Purling, 80, Clay Center, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at a Clay Center hospital. Mr. Purling served 30 years in the Navy and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a prisoner of war in Japan during World War II and spent more than three years and four months in forced labor in Japanese coal mines. He retired from active duty in 1960 and served 10 years in the Fleet Reserve before he retired at the rank of chief yeoman in 1970. He also worked for the Clay Center Police Department in 1963 and 1964 and for Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home until he retired in 1976. He was born Aug. 5, 1919, in Clay Center, the son of Theodore Henry and Althea V. Keech Purling. Mr. Purling was a member of the American Bible Society, USN Fleet Reserve Association, Disabled American Veterans, American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, Retired Enlisted Association, American Legion, South China Patrol Association and Clay Center Evangelical Covenant Church. He married Emma "Mina" Ingrum on Jan. 25, 1946. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Yvonne A. Matheny, Fort Morgan, Colo.; two sons, David C. Purling, Topeka, and Donald Brian Purling, New Orleans; four sisters, Merle Bidwell, Clay Center, Hazel Blake and Dallene Comeau, both of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Imogene Rajewski, Topeka; two brothers, Frank Purling, Manhattan, and Ernest Purling, in Colorado; four grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. Mr. Purling was preceded in death by a daughter. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Clay Center. Burial with military honors will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center. Mr. Purling will lie in state from 3 to 8 p. m. Thursday at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home in Clay Center. Memorial contributions may be made to the Evangelical Covenant Church or the Clay Center Chapter of the American Cancer Association and sent in care of the funeral home.
