O'Brien never forgot where he came from and after his death last Saturday, his remains were brought back to Bayard for a funeral and burial Monday. Darby, as he was called by his friends, was the last of a generation of the O'Brien family. In the early 1900's the family lived in the south part of Bayard where the rock fence is which is occupied by the Wilbur Herron family. The O'Brien family owned and operated a race track on their land. Mr. O'Brien kept in close touch with Bayard events and through his subscription to the News Gazette he knew all about his hometown. His knowledge of family histories was fabulous. The rite of the Christian Burial was prayed in his memory at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church Monday at 2 p m. Rev. Fr. Richard Bergman of Stuart was celebrant. The St. Patrick's Choir sang and Joe Ewing served as organist. Interment was made in the Willow Township Cemetery with the casket carried by Warren Watkins, Edward Lyons, Jim Ramaekers, Joe Pulver, Jim Murrane and Matt Murrane. DONALD W. O'BRIEN Donald, son of William Jennings and Elizabeth Duffy O'Brien, was born June 26, 1901, in Bayard. He attended Dowling High School in Des Moines and was graduated from Bayard High School in 1921. On November 15, 1933, Donald was united in marriage with Mary Jennings at St. Patrick's Church in Bayard by Father Hagerty. Two sons, Donald and William, were born to this union. As a young man, Donald was in the grocery business in Yale. He eventually settled in Des Moines where he owned and operated O'Brien Coal Company. Donald had been in failing health this fall and died late Saturday evening, January 27, 1990, at the age of 88 years, seven months, and one day. Donald was preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers, Quin and John. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Des Moines; two sons, Donald O'Brien, of San Francisco, California, and William O'Brien, of Des Moines; and five grandchildren; Brien, Barbara, Kathleen, J. J. and John O'Brien.
