Description	:	Donald William Kerkow, 87, of Spokane, died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at the Hospice House in Kennewick. He had also lived in Oroville, Waterville, Leavenworth and Wenatchee. He had been an electrician, worked with the Great Northern Railroad and with General Telephone of the Northwest, retiring in 1983. Survivors include his son, Richard Kerkow of Kennewick. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Jones & Jones-Betts Funeral Chapel, 302 Ninth Street in Wenatchee. Interment will be held at later date at Wenatchee City Cemetery. Arrangements are by Jones & Jones-Betts Funeral Home. Donald William "Don" Kerkow passed away peacefully on April 16, 2009, at the Hospice House in Kennewick, WA. He was born on June 6, 1921, in Spokane, WA and was the eldest son of Dr. Roy R. and Nellie B. Kerkow of Oroville, WA. He was raised in Oroville and graduated from Oroville High School in 1938. Following high school, he attended trade school and became an Electrician. During WWII, he worked at the Boeing Aircraft Company in Seattle, where he assembled and installed electrical systems in B-17 and B-29 Bombers. On May 9, 1942, he married Adeline Elizabeth Williams of Oroville and they remained together for over 50 years, until her death in 1994. After WWII, he returned to Central Washington and operated an electrical shop in Waterville. Then in 1952, he moved the family to Leavenworth, WA, where he accepted a position with the Great Northern Railroad on a specialized crew that maintained electric power-lines for the electric-powered train engines that operated through the eight-mile tunnel in the Cascades. When the railroad discontinued use of electric-powered train engines in 1957, he accepted a position with General Telephone of the Northwest and moved the family to Wenatchee, where he worked as a phone installer and field engineer until his retirement in 1983. In 1986, he and Adeline moved to Spokane, to be closer to her family. After her death in 1994, he maintained their residence in north Spokane until March of 2008, when he moved to a nearby retirement apartment. In his retirement years, he was actively involved with numerous volunteer efforts, like Mobile-Meals in the Wenatchee area, then Coats-for-Kids and The Lilac-Bloomsday Association in the Spokane area. He was a proud lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers Association and enjoyed attending regular meetings of the Telephone Pioneers Organization. He also enjoyed family get-togethers, especially Christmas gatherings, Easter Brunch and Thanksgiving dinner. He routinely hosted the family Thanksgiving potluck, even after Adeline was gone. He would prepare the turkey and tell family and friends to bring the rest. We always had a bountiful feast and a great time. He was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed following a wide variety of sports activities. Among his favorites were football, baseball and stockcar racing. In addition to sports, he had a special passion for card games, especially cribbage and pinochle, and was renowned, in family circles, for greeting a fellow cribbage player with the tongue-in-cheek phrase "shut-up and deal" as soon as they walked through the front door. He was preceded in death by his parents; his only sibling, Bruce D. Kerkow; and his wife of 52 years, Adeline E. Kerkow. He is survived by his son, Richard and daughter-in-law, Carol of Kennewick; granddaughter, Ellen Kerkow-Smalley of Portland, OR; grandson, Alex Kerkow of San Jose, CA; and great-grandson, Oscar G. Smalley. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, in the Jones & Jones~Betts Funeral Chapel, on Chelan Avenue in Wenatchee. Internment of ashes will be in the Wenatchee Cemetery, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of the Tri-Cites or The American Cancer Society, two of his favorite charities.
