Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday November 6, 2017, also at the Venue on Broadway, 2202 Broadway, Lubbock.∼Donna Henderson July 24, 1926 - November 1, 2017 DONNA JEAN DEACON was born July 24, 1926 near Waverly, Ohio. Having lost her mother to pneumonia at the age of three, Donna Jean grew up under the watchful eye of her father, Samuel Deacon, and older siblings Bill and Jenny. After Samuel had an arm and leg amputated due to a farming accident, Donna moved to live with Jenny who had married pioneer preacher, Cornelius Abbott. The Abbotts ministered in West Virginia and West Tennessee before moving to Altus, Oklahoma. Neal Jr. and Donna Lee Abbott were technically Donna Jean's nephew and niece, but the three grew up as siblings, remaining very close all their lives. After high school, Donna Jean attended the Oklahoma College for Women, before transferring to Abilene Christian College in 1947. Donna had a memorable alto voice and was active in A Cappella and Sextet, touring much of the southwest on behalf of Abilene Christian. She got her degree in History before marrying Parker Lee Henderson of Alachua, Florida in 1949. Following God's call to ministry, Donna Jean and Parker worked with churches in Florida, Tennessee and Texas, before moving their growing family to Bangkok, Thailand in 1958. Although neither Parker nor Donna Jean had specific training in missions, God used this pioneer missionary couple to plant churches and train leaders outside the United States for more than fifty years. They lived in Bangkok for 20 years and Trinidad, West Indies for 30 years, while also serving three rotations at the Sunset International Bible Institute in Lubbock. They raised five children as disciples of Jesus Christ. Donna Jean and Parker moved back to the family home in North Florida in 2009, and then to Lubbock in 2013. Their 5 children, 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren were happy to have them more accessible. Donna Jean's musical gifts added to her value on the mission-field. While Parker was focused on theological training and evangelism, Donna Jean poured her energy into helping the church sing well. For years to come, her musical fingerprints will be found on song-leaders and Christians across Asia and the Caribbean who enjoy praising God with their voices. Although her children lack Donna Jean's expansive repertoire and ability to recall the lyrics to every song ever written, they do share her love for singing. The last week of Donna Jean's life was full of laughter and tears as her family gathered around her bed singing sweetly---and sometimes not so sweetly---for hours on end. Donna Jean passed from this life on November 1, while Parker had preceded her on June 22. They were a unique couple, blessed with many talented and loving co-workers through the years. Together with their students, colleagues, friends and neighbors, the family praises God for their lives. Parker brought our hearts to faith; Donna Jean taught our faith to sing.
