Description	:	Mrs. Doretta Mangels was the child of Mr. and Mrs. John Bohling. She was born in Bristol, Rhode Island on October 17, 1860. In the year after her birth year her parental family moved to Illinois and made their home there for about eight years. Then they moved farther west and settled on a farm in Iowa, near Fontanelle. Read More	Mrs. Doretta Mangels was the child of Mr. and Mrs. John Bohling. She was born in Bristol, Rhode Island on October 17, 1860. In the year after her birth year her parental family moved to Illinois and made their home there for about eight years. Then they moved farther west and settled on a farm in Iowa, near Fontanelle. The parents gave their children such educational opportunities as the community afforded. Doretta, together with her sister, was enrolled in the first confirmation class of the Lutheran Church in Fontanelle and received into communicant membership of the church in the year 1878. On February 9, 1879, she was united in marriage to Barthold Mangels. The couple made farming their life work. Times and conditions demanded hard work. Husband and wife devoted themselves unsparingly to their daily tasks and to the loving care of their growing family. Nine children were born to them. The first born, a son, died in his infancy. When life's day seemed well past midafternoon and workday goals had been quite satisfactorily reached, Mr. and Mrs. Barthold Mangels retired from the farm in 1917 and took up residence in Greenfield. There they enjoyed the company of friends and were helpfully active in the church. Sadness came to them when they saw their daughter Chrissy, who was Mrs. Wm. Heuckendorf, precede them in death. In 1930 Mrs. Mangels was bereft of her husband and she then lived her widowed life alone in her home in Greenfield. When feebleness of age came to her, she gave up keeping her own house and was pleased to make her home with her children, staying for longer periods in the home of her daughter Mrs. Alda Ritter, where in sickness and in health she enjoyed the kindly care that was constantly given her. She reckoned well with the possibilities that stood before her and without protest yielded to the inevitable on September 20. She would in another month have attained the age of 85 years. Though slight of body Mrs. Doretta Mangels was endowed with persistent purpose and might to achieve. She carried life's burdens with grace. She got joy out of friendships and courage out of her fellowship with God. Always she gave more than demanded. Thus her life was truly a benediction. Her passing is mourned by her sister, Mrs. Mary Kaemmerer; by her children, Mrs. Annie Anderson of Burlington, Kansas; Fred of Fontanelle, Carl of Greenfield, Henry of Fontanelle, Mrs. Alda Ritter of Fontanelle, Herman of Orient, Klaus of Fontanelle; by 19 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren and by many friends in church and community.
