Doris was born September 14, 1934 at her parents' home north of Stratford in Marion Township, Hamilton County, Iowa. The daughter of Melvin Walter and Arlene Fern (Erickson) Engstrom, she grew up alongside her brother, Duward, on the Erickson-Engstrom family farm in east Marion Township south of Stanhope. Read More	Doris Ardelle (Engstrom) Krumm Mathre of Story City, passed away December 31, 2021 at the age of 87 years. Doris was born September 14, 1934 at her parents' home north of Stratford in Marion Township, Hamilton County, Iowa. The daughter of Melvin Walter and Arlene Fern (Erickson) Engstrom, she grew up alongside her brother, Duward, on the Erickson-Engstrom family farm in east Marion Township south of Stanhope. She attended the Marion Township No. 6 country school through the sixth grade and attended junior high at Stanhope Community School. She attended Stanhope High School where she was active in Glee Club, Chorus, Junior and Senior plays, and the Viking Herald. She was a first team guard for Stanhope High's 6-on-6 basketball team and earned four letters for her tenacity on the court. Doris often spoke fondly of her high school years, from the mischief they caused on the school bus (and beyond), to the lifelong friendships made, to meeting the love of her life, Hurley Krumm. She graduated from Stanhope High School on May 21, 1953, where her classmates voted her "Best Figure," "Best Looking Girl," "Sweater Girl of '53," and "Most Popular Girl with Boys." Immediately following graduation she went to Colorado Springs, Colorado where Hurley was stationed at Fort Carson. They married shortly thereafter on June 7, 1953 at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Denver, Colorado. The couple resided at Fort Carson and later transferred to Fort Sill, Oklahoma where they lived until Hurley's discharge in January of 1955, when they returned to Iowa. Their union was blessed with three children, Jennifer, Dennis and Karol. Hurley and Doris raised their family on a farm in rural Boone County and attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Harrison Township. Hurley died suddenly on June 4, 1968 and Doris continued to raise her children, with the help of her in-laws, Hap and Marie Krumm, who lived on the adjacent farm. She married Leslie Mathre on August 16, 1973 and moved to Story City where she has since resided. Together they enjoyed many summers boating and fishing at Mille Lacs Lake in Minnesota and winters in Branson, Missouri. Doris was outgoing with a wonderful sense of humor (with a little bit of mischievousness mixed in) and was a friend to everyone she met. If you knew her, you most likely found your Iowa State fan gear mysteriously replaced by Hawkeye gear at least once. She had a kind soul and never had a negative word to say about anyone. She found joy in life's simplest pleasures - daily coffee with friends, visiting the local thrift stores, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and having a beer at the American Legion. Doris always enjoyed time spent with her family and they with her. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren will always cherish the memories of playing with a never ending supply of toys at grandma's house, playing restaurant at her basement bar, trips to the Story City Carousel, her blush-inducing jokes and her quick wit. She will be dearly missed by her daughters, Jennifer (Andy) Friedmeyer of Ankeny and Karol (Vince Jasper) Krumm of Boone; daughter-in-law, Pam Krumm of rural Boone; five grandchildren, Toby Krumm of Stanhope; Tracy Krumm of Jewell; Abby Friedmeyer of Ankeny; Lindsay (Greg) Friedmeyer of Ankeny and Jeff (Shelby) Friedmeyer of Grimes; five great-grandchildren, Kelbe, Ashton, Ava, Xavier and Gabby; sister-in-law, Joye Engstrom of Ankeny, numerous nieces, nephews, step-children grandchildren and great-grandchildren, cousins, good friend and long time neighbor, Paul Ness, and a host of friends. Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Hurley Krumm and Les Mathre; son, Dennis Krumm; and brother, Duward Engstrom.
