Doris was born March 15, 1915, in Grand Meadow Township, Cherokee County, Iowa, the third child of Harvey and Emma (Smith) Diller. Burial was in Sunset View Cemetery at Washta, Iowa. Doris was born March 15, 1915, in Grand Meadow Township, Cherokee County, Iowa, the third child of Harvey and Emma (Smith) Diller. Burial was in Sunset View Cemetery at Washta, Iowa. Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday at Quimby United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Carolyn Hollar officiating. She was a life-long resident of Cherokee County. She graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1932. She was married to George Mundy on Sept. 10, 1940, at Sibley, Iowa. The couple lived on farms in Grand Meadow and near Quimby, where they farmed the Simonsen land. Doris was very active in her community. She was a member of the Quimby United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for over 25 years and helped with several sessions of summer Bible school. She sang in the church choir for several years and was an active Circle and UMW member as well. She was president of UMW and held other local offices as well as serving a term as a District UMW officer. She and George were active members of the FFQ (young adult group) when Rev. Max Paige served in Quimby. Doris also was a MYF leader for several years. She and George were also active square dancers, who toured from town to town with their dance group to promote Quimby's Diamond Jubilee. Both Doris and George spearheaded publicity and money-making efforts for the Quimby Centennial. Doris was a member of the Quimby Kitchen Band, which entertained to promote the Centennial. Doris also helped out with the schools and with adult education. She volunteered as a helper in the Learning Disabilities Program, helped organize the area Peace Poster contest through the schools and taught many night classes of crocheting and tatting. She and George also volunteered to teach ballroom dancing and square dancing to young people. Doris was also a Cub Scout den mother and helped organize summer swimming programs for youth. All who knew Doris admired her great ability at raising plants and flowers. Her large gardens and flowering hedges will remain in the memories of our community for a long time. Along with her own gardening, Doris was a member of the Quimby Garden Club for many years and donated many plants to the Quimby City Park. She also served on the committee for the Family Craft Building for the Cherokee County Fair for over 35 years and was a tireless fair worker and a frequent winner of prizes for both flowers and needlework. She was also a 4-H leader for many years, including several years as leader along with George, of the Cavaliers 4-H Riding Club. Doris and George were also active in establishing the Quimby Community Center. Doris served on the board for 10 years as well as being active in the Quimby Lions Club. Perhaps the public service that Doris was most proud of was her service to the Quimby Public Library. She was one of three people responsible for restarting the local public library in Quimby in 1951. For over 50 years, she served on the board as a trustee and was instrumental in plans for the new library which came to fruition during the 1990s. Doris was also a decades-long member of the National Federated Women's Club, another group that she served as an officer and county chairman. She was a tireless promoter of reading and a lead member in the Women's Club reading program. Survivors include her children, Helen Hudson and her husband, Marc of Crawfordsville, Ind.; and Russell Mundy and his wife, Linda of Sykesville, Md.; four grandchildren, Alexandra Hudson, Alison Mundy Kramer, Matthew Mundy and Susan Mundy; a niece, Ruth Countryman and her husband, Adair; and a close cousin, Marjorie O'Neal. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George on May 4, 1998; a grandson, Ian Hudson; a sister, Dorothy Diller Leonard; and a brother, Ray Diller.
