She married on July 29, 1945, at her paternal grandparents' home at 4 East Webster, Marshalltown, Iowa, to Wilfred Arthur Dickenson, son of Wilfred Edward Dickenson & Viola Smith Davis. Doris & Wilfred had six children: Joyce, Linda, Stanley, Wilma, Mary, and Wilfred Jr., who is called Willy. There are 11 grandchildren. Doris' father was a life-long Iowa farmer, who delivered countless calves and piglets to his livestock. He was in his farmhouse bedroom to witness the births of his son Fred Jr in 1912 and his daughter Joyce in 1916. So he knew what to do when his wife Verna went into labor on 13 July 1918. He phoned Dr. Kaufmann and told him to come quickly. But the baby wasn't about to wait for the doc. So Fred delivered the baby and cut and tied the umbilical cord. When Doc Kaufmann arrived, Fred joked that he wouldn't need to pay him, since Fred had done all the work! The doctor was not amused, and billed Fred for the house call, which Fred paid. Later, whenever little Doris was naughty, her father would forgive her and joke that he must have tied the umbilical cord wrong.
