Description	:	Miss Doris Elaine Magaha, 81, Frederick, died Sunday May 5 at her home. Born in Hagerstown on January 5, 1932 she was the daughter of the late Carroll Hightman and Mildred Ahalt Magaha. Born in Hagerstown on January 5, 1932 she was the daughter of the late Carroll Hightman and Mildred Ahalt Magaha. She attended Guildford Elementary and Roland Park Junior High School. After graduating from Eastern High School, Doris went to Goucher College on a full scholarship. After the first year as a teacher at Robert Poole Junior High School, she was assigned to School #49, the only accelerated junior high school at the time. When that school was converted to a neighborhood junior high, she requested a transfer to her alma mater, Eastern High School, where she became the advisor to the class of 1963. In 1966 she became a teacher at Thomas Johnson High School, after five years she transferred to Walkersville High School, where she became head of the English department. Having achieved two master's degrees (at Wesleyan University in Connecticut and at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore) she was well prepared to teach during evenings at Frederick Community College, which she also did for twelve years. After she stopped teaching at Walkersville, she worked at AOPA for fifteen years, first in the Medical Certification Department, then the Publications Division. She was a lifelong Lutheran, Baptized at St. John's in Hagerstown, she resumed at Christ English Lutheran in Baltimore, where she was confirmed by Dr. John L. Deaton. Having studied voice with Thelma Viol, who not only taught at Peabody but also was contralto soloist at the church, Doris sang alto in the choir at Christ Lutheran and later was the alto soloist at Messiah Episcopal in Baltimore. She continued at Evangelical Lutheran in Frederick. She then transferred her membership to Good Sheperd Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir, became the editor of The Messenger, and was involved as a Stephen Minister until she underwent quadruple bypass surgery in 2007. She is survived by numerous cousins and close friends. At Miss Magaha's request graveside funeral services will be at Zion Lutheran Church cemetery in Middletown and will be at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Ronald Reeves, her former pastor, will officiate.
