Description	:	Doris Acker, the daughter of Michael and Frances (Roberts) Campbell, was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, October 31, 1919 where she spent her childhood years. Her father was born in Big Pond, Nova Scotia and her mother in Belle Isle, Newfoundland. She was the youngest of three children and was predeceased by a brother, David, and a sister, Kathleen (Kay). Read More	Doris Acker, the daughter of Michael and Frances (Roberts) Campbell, was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, October 31, 1919 where she spent her childhood years. Her father was born in Big Pond, Nova Scotia and her mother in Belle Isle, Newfoundland. She was the youngest of three children and was predeceased by a brother, David, and a sister, Kathleen (Kay). Doris loved to share her family's life stories, one of which was passed down from her mother about their experience during the Halifax Explosion. On December 6, 1917, Michael was working on the Halifax waterfront while Frances was home tending to their infant son, David. After the first explosion, Frances picked up baby David, wrapped him in a blanket and rushed out the door. A second explosion blew out a window, knocking Frances down the stairs of their upper floor apartment. As survivors gathered at the Halifax Commons, Frances assumed that Michael had died in the Explosion. Late in the night she heard her name being called "Fran, Fran" by Michael who, luckily, had survived the Explosion. Shortly after the Halifax Explosion, the Campbells moved back to Glace Bay. Michael built a large home at 5 Alexandra St. and they attended St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church. Doris's father died in 1920 from pneumonia caused by the Halifax Explosion . Frances, needing to provide for her children, operated her home as a boarding house. Doris often spoke fondly about her mother who was able to read tea leaves and fortune cards and to play the accordion. She spoke of summers in Ben Eoin and of working at local shops in Glace Bay. She loved to dance, swim and skate (as she did well into her adult years). Doris remembers visiting her mother's home in Belle Isle, Newfoundland as a child, and their trip aboard the passenger ferry the SS Caribou which was later sunk by the Germans during the Second World War. During the War, Doris moved to Kitchener, Ontario where she joined the War effort by working in a munitions plant. After the War, she met her husband to be, Harry E. Acker, while they worked at an apple processing plant in the Annapolis Valley. Harry came from a very large family in Lawrencetown, Annapolis Co., his mother Radie Laverta (Woodworth), was born April 18 1897 and died August 18 1941. His father, Ezekial Lias, was born June 16 1877 in Springfield, N.S., and died June 7 1963. Harry served overseas during the Second World War, where he received severe petrol burns to both legs and was transferred back to Canada. He received six wartime service medals. Harry and Doris married on September 15, 1948 in Halifax and had four children - three sons and one daughter: Michael born October 9,1951;, Robert born September 20, 1953; Harold born June 18, 1955; and Susan born December 23, 1956. They settled at 5 Primrose St., Dartmouth in 1957. Harry worked for app 30 yrs as a carpenter at Camp Hill Veterans Hospital and at DND Stadacona until his retirement. Doris worked for several years at John Martin Junior High as a lunch monitor. She liked to bake, knit, read, do puzzles, and particularly enjoyed camping with her family. To help make ends meet, Harry and Doris rented the basement of their already small house, first to the Boudreau family and later to the Keeping family. As their finances improved, they later purchased "the camp" in Mooseland on the eastern shore of Nova Scotia where they spent most of their summers. Harry passed away in September, 1996. Doris lived at 5 Primrose St. for 50 years and was always comfortable in her house. She was a regular at the nearby Sobeys store and would often go there and chat for hours. Her good friends included neighbour Mona Saldon, lifelong friend Martha Gillespie, Edie Foster - a friend of 53 years who helped her in time of need and kept in touch with weekly visits up until Doris's passing, Anna Lee, and Betty and Kaye McGillivray of Arlington, Massachusetts. Doris took an active interest in her parish, St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church, Dartmouth and was a member of the CWL for 47 years. Doris will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, good friend and as a very giving person who enjoyed people, life and laughter. Even in the most difficult of times she could find a smile. Her kindness towards others and free-spirited way stayed with her throughout her life, even in her last few years of living with Alzheimers disease. ACKER, Doris G. - 88, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 6, 2008, in Oakwood Terrace. Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Michael H. and Frances (Roberts) Campbell. Doris was a long-time member of St. Anthony's Parish, Dartmouth, and was a member of the CWL for over 40 years. She moved to Kitchener, Ont., during the wartime to help out in a munitions factory. She worked as a lunch monitor at John Martin Junior High for several years. She enjoyed reading, skating, swimming and various crafts. Doris was never at a loss for words and thoroughly enjoyed sharing her life stories with anyone who would lend an ear. Her fun loving spirit will be fondly remembered and missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her daughter, Susan (Gerrard) Garden, Enfield; sons, Harold, Dartmouth; Robert, Calgary; Michael (Carole), Ostrea Lake; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 48 years, Harry E. Acker; sister, Kathleen; brother, David. Visiting 6-8 p.m. today in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home. Funeral mass 9 a.m. Saturday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Father Jan Grotkowski officiating. Burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Family flowers only.
