Tawes, 79, of Crisfield, died Tuesday, March 22, 1988, in Pocomoke City, Maryland. Born in Crisfield, she was a daughter of the late Vernon D. and Mary Lawson Nelson. She was a volunteer nurse's aide at McCready Memorial Hospital during World War II. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Crisfield, where she had been a Sunday School teacher for 40 years and was on the board of directors of the church. Additionally, she was a member of Crisfield's Chesapeake Chapter 28, Order of the Eastern Star, and she was also a member of the boards of McCready Hospital and the Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home. Surviving are her husband, Orrie Lee Tawes, Jr.; a son and a daughter; five grand-children, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held Friday in Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. John F. Mitchell officiating. Interment was in Crisfield's Sunnyridge Memorial Park. Contributions may be made in the memory of the deceased to the memorial fund of Asbury United Methodist Church, or to the Lower Somerset County Ambulance and Rescue Squad, PO Box 406, both Crisfield, Md. 21817.
