Born 86 years ago on her grandfather's ranch in Sultana, CA, Doris Pauline Crawford was the eldest daughter of the Rev. Ralph and Pearl (Collins) Crawford. She developed her love for music as a child and began piano lessons at age 12. She went on to study piano and voice at the College of Pacific Conservatory of Music where she was inducted into Mu Phi Epsilon, a music honor sorority. After receiving her baccalaureate degree in 1940, she first taught elementary students in a 2-room school near Modesto. This was followed by teaching positions in Rio Vista and Stockton. In 1943 her father officiated over her marriage to fellow Conservatory student, William (Bill) H. Ramsey. Enlisting in the United States Navy on April 28, 1945, she served during WWII as a Hospital Apprentice First Class between June, 1945 and January, 1946. In 1951, Pauline, husband Bill and several close friends started singing in an informal eight member choral group that led to the formation of the Stockton Chorale. As a member of the Chorale she performed in Carnegie Hall, throughout Europe, Australia and New Zealand, as well as California. She was also a member of the Wednesday Morning Musicale and Central United Methodist Church. Between 1956 and 1993 she was a resident in the San Francisco East Bay area. For 20 years she served as choral director for Grace Community Methodist Church in Oakland. She was employed for 30 years bringing joy into the lives of patients in psychiatric treatment facilities, convalescent hospitals and nursing homes as an adult music teacher for the Hayward School District. Pauline's major passion was world travel. During her life she visited countries on six continents, including China and Russia. She was especially privileged to visit the Galapagos Islands. She also traveled extensively in the United States, often in the course of spending time with her three daughters. In 1982, Pauline was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Bill Ramsey. A loving sister, she was preceded in death by two brothers and is survived by her youngest brother, Ralph W. Crawford of Union City, CA. A devoted mother, she will be sorely missed by her three daughters, Marilyn (Mel) Nickless and husband, Don of Stockton, Dr. Carol Ramsey of Houston, Texas and Celeste Ramsey and husband, Steve Lohr of Niwot, Colorado. She is survived by six granddaughters, Erin and Heather Nickless and Andrea Angel of Stockton, Stephanie and Madeline Ramsey of Colorado and Diana Arthur of Anchorage, Alaska. She is also survived by nine nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Mildred Crawford and several cousins. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Morris Chapel on the campus of the University of the Pacific, 3601 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, CA 95211 (Parking is available at Central United Methodist Church). In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the William H. and Pauline Crawford Ramsey Endowed Scholarship at the University of the Pacific, Advancement Services, Hand Hall, 3601 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, CA 95211 or to Central United Methodist Church, 3700 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, CA 95204
