Read More	Doris Marie Reed, 91, died Sept. 26, 2006 in Oak Harbor at the home of her daughter. Doris, the daughter of Oak Harbor pioneer parents, Otto Gerrit and Minnie (Meyers) VanDyk, was born in Oak Harbor on April 29, 1915. Her father was instrumental in construction of many Oak Harbor buildings, including the Christian Reformed Church, the Methodist Church, Oak Harbor Theater, Pioneer Building, the Roller Barn and the Maylor and Fakkema barns. Doris attended Oak Harbor High School and was a member of the first girl's softball and basketball teams at OHHS. She was a Princess with the First Holland Days Festival and 50 years later, was honored as the Grand Marshal of the Holland Happening Parade. She graduated in 1932 and, in 1936, was married to Charles E. Sullivan. The Sullivans made Coupeville their home from 1937 to 1947 before moving back to Oak Harbor. Doris was a very skilled swimmer. She would routinely swim from City Beach to Maylor's Point and back. She was successful in saving the lives of two swimmers at the beach. Doris was preceded in death by her husband Charles in 1964. Doris met Wayne J. "Junior" Reed while working at the Navy Exchange. They were married in Tacoma on July 30, 1966. Following Wayne's retirement, they moved to Burlington for 10 years, returning to Oak Harbor in 1992. Doris enjoyed camping, fishing, clamming, travel, attending baseball games in Phoenix at spring training and trips to Branson, Hawaii and Reno. She enjoyed going to coffee with friends and, most of all, enjoyed being with family. For the past 25 years, one of her greatest pleasures was her annual birthday party given by her daughter Susan Fakkema. Doris is survived by her husband Wayne of Coupeville; by three children and their spouses: Patrick E. "Pat" and Gert Sullivan of Coupeville; Susan and Bob Fakkema and Michael and Connie Sullivan, all of Oak Harbor and one sister Althea Galbraith of Mountlake Terrace. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Jeannette W. VanDyk, Garrett O. VanDyk, William C. VanDyk, and Harriet VanDyk Oldenburg. Ten grandchildren: Daniel Sullivan, Rodney and Carla Sullivan, Joan Thompson, Julie Fakkema, Jane Fikse, Kimberly Kale and Kelly Leckelt, 16 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. 26 Sep 2006 Whidbey News Times Whidbey WA
